Weathering

• The breakdown of rocks into smaller and smaller
  pieces.

Ice Wedging

• The Mechanical process by which liquids seep in
  to cracks, in rock, freezes, then expands,
  opening the cracks up even wider.

Abrasion

• The grinding and wearing down of rock surfaces by
  other rock or sand particles.

Differential Weathering

• The process by which softer, less
  weather-resistant rocks wear away, leaving
  harder, more weather-resistant rocks behind.

Soil

• A loose mixture of small mineral fragments and
  organic material.

Parent Rock

• Rock that is the source of soil.

Top Soil

• The top layer of soil that generally contains
  humus.

Deflation

• The lifting and removal of fine sediment by wind.

Erosion

• The removal and transport of material by wind,
  water, or ice.

Beach

• An area of the shoreline made up of material
  deposited by waves.

Saltation

• The movement of sand-sized particles by a
  skipping and bouncing action and the direction
  the wind is blowing.

• A mound of wind deposited sand.

Icebergs

• A large piece of ice that breaks off an ice shelf
  and drifts into the ocean.

Glacial Drift

• All material carried and deposited by glaciers.

Till

• Unsorted rock material that is deposited directly
  by glacial ice when it melts.

Mass Movement

• The movement of any material down slope.

Rock Fall

• The falling of a newly detached mass of rock from
  a cliff or down a very steep slope.

Landslide

• A general term used to describe the down-slope
  movement of soil, rock and organic materials
  under the influence of gravity.

Mudflow

• A flowage of water-saturated earth material
  possessing a high degree of fluidity during
  movement.
