IHY and IPY
  • ICESTAR/IHY Proposal

2
IPY and its EoIs
  • International Polar Year
  • Also running 2007/8
  • www.ipy.org
  • Call for Expressions of Intent in late 2004
  • Received over 900, including one from IHY
  • Clustered thematically and grouped into missions
    within each cluster
  • One or two EoIs suggested to lead writing of a
    fuller proposal
  • Space related cluster
  • IHY and ICESTAR leading a mission with 29 EoIs
    as suggested participants
  • ICESTAR
  • Interhemispheric Conjugacy Effects in
    Solar-Terrestrial and Aeronomy Research
  • Martin Fullekrug will say more

3
ICESTAR/IHY proposal
  • Fuller proposal prepared by June 30th 2005
  • Interhemispheric Conjugacy in Geospace Phenomena
    and their Heliospheric Drivers
  • Mostly Kirsti Kauristie (FMI)
  • 24 original EoIs included
  • Countries
  • Australia, Brazil, Canada, Finland, Italy, Japan,
    Malaysia, Sweden, UK, Ukraine, USA
  • http//www.ipy.org/
  • (proposal 66)
  • Focus on three main areas
  • Coupling processes between the different
atmospheric layers and their connection with the
    solar activity
  • Energy and mass exchange between the ionosphere
    and the magnetosphere
  • Inter-hemispheric similarities and asymmetries in
    geospace phenomena
  • Organisation
  • federation of subsidiary projects
  • Work with existing mechanisms
  • CIPs proposed as principal mechanism for
    establishing inter-project cooperation

Status
  • Received conditional endorsement from IPY on
    25th August
  • Implementation Plan will be needed before 1 March
    2006
  • Pierre Cilliers (EoI 551) has proposed a CIP with
    an ICESTAR flavour
  • GAIA-VXO Global Auroral Imaging Access
  • Eric Donovan, University of Calgary
  • First version of a browser available at
    http//gaia-vxo.org/
  • Optical/riometer groups invited to participate
  • ICESTAR-IHY-CAWSES session proposed for EGU 2006
  • The Joint Committee
  • considers that your proposal includes very
strong scientific components and demonstrates a
high level of organisation and of adherence to
    the IPY themes and goals.
  • has every reason to believe that the activity
will constitute a prominent and valued part of
    the IPY program
  • intends that these endorsements provide
assistance and support as IPY researchers seek
    funding for the work proposed.
  • expects to provide final endorsements,
contingent on continued progress, by 1 March 2006
