IHY, ICESTAR, IPY Research topic Radio wave
propagation in the ionosphere - observations and
models. (http//ionos.ingv.it/IHY/resources/invita
tion.pdf)
  • Description of Programme
  • Development and maintenance of COST296/IHY Web
site to exchange general information, expertise,
know-how, links to the data archive and databases
produced by this Action among the IHY community.
  • Coordination of multi-instruments observation
campaigns in synergy with the IY community. The
data archive created during the observation
    periods and/or severe heliogeophysical conditions
will also form a baseline collection against
which later forecasting efforts may be compared.
  • Stimulate joint investigations on interconnection
between low, middle and high latitude ionosphere
and plasmasphere as disturbances of the plasma
distribution at low-latitude can also affect the
mid and high latitude ionosphere in some large
    storm events.

Special campaigns
COST 296 contributes to The Whole Heliosphere
Interval targeted campaigns from March 20 to
April 16 (http//ihy2007.org/WHI/targeted_plans.sh
tml). The COST 296 supports the first one of the
Geospace Targeted Observing Campaigns
(http//ihy2007.org/WHI/teccampaign.shtml) with
regular Vertical Sounding measurements and TEC
measurements. Contact David Altadill

lucilla.alfonsi_at_ingv.it European digisondes
observation campaign (in Drift mode) aimed at
measuring the ionospheric E layer height
variations by taking advantage of the Precision
Group Height Measurement technique (PGHM). The
COST296 campaign met the objectives of the Third
CAWSES Global Tidal campaign scheduled for 1 June
to 14 August 2007. Coordinator David Altadill

Realization of the European COST296 - IHY
calendar Coordinated by INGV
The competition for the European kids drawings
(6-11 years old) has been launched on March 2007.
The best drawings have been published on the COST
296/IHY calendar issued on September 2007. The
launch has been made in the frame of different
outreach activities (seminars, conferences,
exhibitions, etc) organized at national level in
8 different Countries Cyprus, Czech Republic,
Finland, France, Italy, Poland, Spain, UK. To
stimulate the fantasy of the pupils and to take
the opportunity of education on Sun and Sun-Earth
connections, some cards on specific items have
been produced and provided to the teachers.

The Calendar hosts 3 drawings every two months
for each Country, covering 16 months (from
September 2007 to December 2008). The
Coordination team has received more than 1200
drawings from all over Europe! Among these only
25 have been selected. On September 20, the
Calendar has been officially presented with the
proclamation of the winners in Rome (INGV
Conference Hall).
