Approaches to Personality

• Psychodynamic Approach
• We all have unconscious determinates
• Id, Ego, Superego
• Looks at understanding the person as a whole
• Trait Approach
• Fundamental units of personality Traits are
  stable
• Minimizes the role of environmental factors

• Situation Approach
• Behavior is determined by the situation or
  environment.
• Draws from the Social Learning Theory
• Interactional Approach
• Behaviors are determined by both the persons
  make up and the situation.
• They work together
• Phenomenological Approach
• Similar to Interactional approach
• BUT examines the understanding of the persons
  interpretation of him/herself and the environment

• We must consider both psychological traits and
  situations in order to understand and predict
  behavior
• Trait and State Measures
• Traits Typical style of behaving
• State The situations effect on behavior
• We ask the questions
• How do you typically feel?

• Used to predict behaviors in given situations
• If we have the knowledge of the how one might
  deal with a situation then we can better predict
