Title: The Beneficial Reuse Project

1
The Beneficial Reuse Project
  • As the water/wastewater costs rise, communities
    have started to look
  • for different methods of water/wastewater
    disposal
  • Communities are considering and implementing
    water reuse projects
  • that reclaim valuable wastewater discharges,
    substituting for drinking
  • water supplies in a wide variety of potable and
    industrial uses
  • Sanitary sewer collection and treatment is
    provided by the University
  • Area Joint Authority (UAJA) at its Spring Creek
    Pollution Control Facility
  • (a 10.6 million-gallon-per-day advanced
    wastewater treatment plant
  • that discharges to Spring Creek)
  • Total project cost approximately 154 million
  • To produce the reuse water, UAJA developed a
    multiple-barrier approach to produce an
    exceptional quality product while ensuring
adequate safeguards to limit the potential for
the production of a nonpotable product
  • The process first goes through prescreening with
    a 500-micron wedge wire strainer
  • Then the primary treatment is accomplished
    through microfiltration
  • The microfiltration system was proven to provide
the highest quality water with the lowest
    operating and maintenance costs
  • The system incorporates backwash treatment to
recover 99 of the product water for feed to the
    reverse osmosis system
  • Following reverse osmosis, UAJA uses a two-step
disinfection process for the final barrier
  • They then store the reuse water for resale within
    its newly constructed distribution system
  • Industries that use the reuse water
