Title: Luis Jimenez 19402006

1
Luis Jimenez(1940-2006)
That's part of what artists, writers and
musicians do. They expand the boundaries and
raise the level of understanding among people.
Art has an obligation to take us to a different
place.
2
I have a way of looking at the world that is
somewhat unique, that is not maybe totally
mainstream
3
I would hope that I've helped people have
insights into the world we are living in. I
believe in the communicative power of the image
I believe people can be changed through exposure
to images. My work is made for a community.
4
Principles
Balance - This has an asymmetrical balance. The
horse and rider are balancing as if they were
one. Proportion - The sculpture is about 8 feet
tall, which towers over any person. This makes
each detail stand out and makes it that much more
impressive. Unity - Jimenez is using a
Southwestern theme that reflects his heritage.
5
Principles
Variety - Jimenez includes little details and a
variety of colors that contributes to its
interest. Repetition - There is continuous
rhythm, and not much repetition in figures,
although there is a definite theme of color.
Movement - This sculpture has a lot of
movement, the horse is bucking and the rider
yells with excitement. The movement of the horse
exaggerates the riders position.
6
Purpose
Jimenez creates his sculptures to celebrate his
Hispanic heritage. He centers on themes relating
to Mexican events and people. He specifically
targets the working class, not just the daily
chores, but also the social aspect of the working
class. He uses bright colors and fiberglass to
create an intense finish.
7
Elements of Art
Shape - The shape itself is simple, but the
complexity lies in the details. Texture - The
coyote has many textures surfaces that create a
sense of life in the coyote. Space - The single
coyote creates a sense of independence, but the
posture suggests mourning. Planes - There are no
real planes. The sculpture is very fluid. Value -
The coyote has deep and bright colors to contrast
with each other. Colors - The metallic colors
provoke a sense of intensity within the coyote.

Material/Technique
  • Jimenez uses fiberglass as his material. He
first learner of fiberglass at his dads machine
shop, where his hot-rodder friends would use it
on their vehicles. The material was used in
airframe fuselages and racecar bodies, but he
prefers to use it because when used properly, it
    can create an amazing finish.
