Bacteria

• Prokaryotic cells that multiply rapidly.
  Classified by shape and by how they stain using
  the gram stain
• Gram pos purple, gram neg red
• Shape
• Round cocci
• Rods are bacilli
• Corkscrew - spirilla

• Bacteria are everywhere- they can live on any
  surface, with or without oxygen
• In a compromised host, bacteria (even normal
  flora) can be the cause of life threatening
  diseases
• Nosocomial infection an infection acquired
  during a stay at the hospital

Aseptic technique

• Pathogens are everywhere, but they can be
  controlled or eliminated for a period of time by
  maintaining a clean, or aseptic, environment
• Aseptic technique practices or procedures that
  are used to ensure a clean, safe environment by
  controlling or eliminating contamination

Handwashing using the correct technique

• The single most important thing you can do to
  control infection.
• Correct handwashing is the key to medical asepsis

When do you wash your hands?

• When first arriving to work.
• Before performing each procedure on a patient.
• During a procedure if your hands become
  contaminated.
• Between each patient for whom you provide care.
• After using the restroom.
• After removing gloves from your hands.
• Before eating.

So youd think wed all be washing our hands,
right? WRONG

• 1996 study showed only 12 of M.D.s washed their
  hands after every patient contact
• Another study conformed M.D.s washed their hands
  between patients 9 of the time- when asked, they
  answered 50-95

• 1.8 million patients will contract nosocomial
  infections each year- 20,000 of these patients
  will die directly from infection. Another 70,000
  will die from complications of a nosocomial
  infection
• Nosocomial infections add 4.5 billion/year to
  health care costs

• So- whats the deal here? Doctors, nurses,
  healthcare workers are smart people- why dont
  they wash their hands?
