How the other half lived.
  • Many wealthy people lived in spacious homes
called plantation homes. These homes were very
large and fancy. They had a large land area
    where slaves would grow crops.

4
Southern Plantations
Southern plantations used slaves to grow and
harvest Crops. Fewer than 10 out of 100 southern
men Owned slaves.
5
The Slaves on the Plantation
  • They grew indigo, rice, sugar and tobacco.
  • There were two main types of slaves.
  • Field hands
  • House slaves
  • They would work from sunrise to sunset.
  • They could not marry, own property, testify in
    court, or earn their freedom.

Cities
  • Atlanta, Georgia has always been a bustling
center of energy. It was this way even before
    the Civil War began.

The War Between Brothers
  • Family members fought against one another on both
    sides of the war.

8
Civil War Worries
  • When Sherman was ravaging in the State of South
Carolina during the Civil War, many people moved
from the lower part of the state to the upper
part in order to escape his cruelties.

9
Soldier Life
Soldiers were assigned many different jobs at
camp. We will learn about those jobs during our
webquest.
10
Soldier Food
  • A soldier has a hard life. General Lee wrote
    his wife.
  • Food supplies included flour, corn, pork, and
    beans.
  • Most army cooks had never cooked before.
  • While marching soldiers usually ate only hard
    biscuits
    called hardtack and drank coffee.

11
The Civil War Soldier
  • Many soldiers were very young men. Some drum
corps volunteers signed up for war as young as 13
years of age. The pay was also very poor. Both
sides were paid only 11 a month when the war
began. It was a real treat to have your portrait
taken. Many soldiers sent these home to their
    families as a remembrance.

12
The Upper Hand
  • Resources in 1860 favored the north. But the
south had the advantage of fighting on its own
soil and, in the beginning , better commanders.
