Title: Healthcare in Malaysia

1
Healthcare in Malaysia
  • Dr Jacob Thomas
  • Group Medical Advisor, Sime Darby Ltd
  • Board Member,
  • Association of Private Hospitals of Malaysia
  • OCT 2007

2
History
Since the 1800s , Great Britain established
colonies and protectorates in the area of current
Malaysia In 1948, the British-ruled territories
on the Malay Peninsula and formed the Federation
of Malaya, which became independent in 1957.
3
History
  • In the 1960s, the healthcare systems of both
    countries were very similar.
  • The British had bequeathed a relatively well
    functioning administrative structure and civil
service, which extended into the public health
    services.
  • Cameron highlands

4
The basic institutions of sanitation and
preventive health as well as a network of public
hospitals were already in place. The
post-colonial governments, saw healthcare
services as an essential part of national
development.
5
The Evolution
  • The current healthcare system since
independence, stems from the colonial legacy of
    national provision bequeathed from Britain.

6
DELIVERY
  • Both the public and private sectors are today,
    important players in Malaysia's healthcare
    delivery system.

7
  • DELIVERY
  • About 80 per cent of healthcare services are
provided by the heavily subsidized public sector
and focuses on healthcare promotion as well as
rehabilitative and curative care at the primary,
    secondary, and tertiary levels.
  • Sungai Buloh hospital

8
The Private Sector
  • The private sector, on the other hand, offers
mainly curative and rehabilitative services, and
is financed strictly on a non-subsidized,
    fee-for-service basis.
  • Pantai MC

9
There Are Three Types Of Public Hospitals
  • 1) general hospitals
  • 2) district hospitals and
  • 3) special medical institutions (SMIs).
  • 38,000 Public Sector beds in the country.
  • 123 public hospitals all over Malaysia with an
    additional six specialist medical institutions
including psychiatric hospitals and the National
    Heart Institute.
  • Because of their size (average between 500 to 700
beds each) and comprehensive range of care,
general hospitals are the most preferred public
    hospitals in Malaysia.
  • District hospitals, which are much smaller,
average between 250 to 400 beds each, provide
more basic diagnostic and curative services.
