Table of Contents
  • Objectives for this lesson
  • External Anatomy and Functions of the Larynx.
  • Internal Anatomy and Important relations of the
    Larynx.
  • Anatomy of the Cartilages of the Larynx.
  • Internal Anatomy of the membranes , Ligaments and
    Muscles of the Larynx.
  • Treatment of Obstruction of the Larynx. (
    Tracheotomy and Cricothyrotomy ).

3
Objectives
  • When you finish this lesson, you should be able
    to
  • Describe the Functions and Structure of the
    Larynx.
  • Identify the Internal Anatomy and Relations of
    the Larynx.
  • Identify the Anatomy of the Cartilages of the
    Larynx.
  • Understand the Internal Anatomy of the Membranes
, Ligaments and Muscles of the Larynx.
  • Explain the Treatment of the Obstruction of the
    Larynx.

4
The Larynx
  • The larynx is the portion of the respiratory
    tract containing the vocal cords
  • A 2-inch-long, tube-shaped organ, opens into the
laryngopharynx above and is continuous with the
    trachea below.

5
FUNCTIONS OF LARYNX
  • The larynx assist in
  • Deglutition (swallowing)
  • Respiration (breathing)
  • Main function of larynx is
  • Phonation (voice production)

6
ANTERIOR VIEW OF LARYNX
7
Structure
  • The larynx consists of four basic components
  • A cartilaginous skeleton
  • Membranes and ligaments
  • Muscles

8
The Cartilages
  • THE CARTILAGENOUS PART comprised of
  • Single Cartilages
  • Thyroid
  • Cricoid
  • Epiglottis
  • Paired Cartilages
  • Arytenoid
  • Corniculate
  • Cuneiform

9
Thyroid Cartilage
  • Thyroid cartilage is the largest cartilage of the
    larynx.
  • It has two parts that are join together in the
    center.
  • Central prominence is called ADAMS APPLE

superior cornu
Oblique line
inferior cornu
10
Cricoid Cartilage
  • Lies below the thyroid cartilage
  • Forms a complete ring
  • Has a narrow anterior arch a broad posterior
    lamina

11
Epiglottis
  • Leaf shaped, situated behind the root of the
    tongue
  • Connected
  • In front to the body of hyoid bone
  • By its stalk to the back of thyroid cartilage .
  • Upper edge is free.

12
FRONT AND LATERAL VIEW OF EPIGLOTTIS
13
Arytenoid Cartilages
  • Small, pyramidal in shape
  • Situated at the back of the larynx.

14
Corniculate Cuneiform Cartilages
  • Corniculate Cartilages
  • Small nodules
  • Join with arytenoid cartilages
  • Cuneiform Cartilages
  • Small rod shaped.
  • Do not join with any other cartilage .
