2Background
- Born in Augusta, Georgia in 1930
- Grew up wanting to be an artist
- Was drafted and stationed in Japan
- Returned to study at the University of South
Carolina, Columbia between 1949-51 - From 1952-58 worked in NY bookshop and as a
commercial artist
3- In New York, met and was influenced by John Cage
(composer), Merce Cunningham (choreographer), and
Robert Rauschenberg. - Visited Philadelphia to see work by Duchamp
- Inspired by a dream to paint the flag
4 Early Work
- we see that it is not a painting of a flag. The

- In the stars it's allegro vivace, agitated
movement, flickering and exploding. In the
stripes it's andante. - David Sylvester, "About
Modern Art"
6- Johns' early work combined a serious concern for
the craft of painting with an everyday, almost
absurd, subject matter. The meaning of the
painting could be found in the painting process
itself. It was a new experience for gallery goers
to find paintings solely of such things as flags
and numbers. - -pbs
