Aim of this evening
  • To support students by creating a plan of action
    towards achieving a college place, apprenticeship
    or job

Our world is changing. Fast!
  • by 2020 there will be 5 million fewer low
    skilled jobs in Britain than there are today
  • 40 of all jobs in 2020 will require a graduate
    qualification
  • the top 10 jobs that will be in demand in 2010
    did not exist in 2004

  • todays learners will have 10 14 jobs. by
    the age of 38!
  • we are currently preparing students for jobs
    that dont yet exist

Collaboration and Partnership
  • Our vision for the 14-19 phase sets out a range
    of opportunities that should be available to
    young people in every area of the country.
    Schools, colleges and training providers will
    need to collaborate, because no single
    institution will be able to provide them all on
    its own

The new range of pathways
  • GCSEs and A levels
  • The Diploma
  • Apprenticeships
  • Employment with Accredited Training
  • Foundation Learning Tier
  • These pathways are being initiated between 2008
    and 2013
  • These reforms should enable every young person
    the chance to develop their skills

THE DIPLOMA introduced in 2008
  • By 2011 there will be 17 subject areas
  • At 16 Foundation or Higher Diploma
  • Advanced full time course
  • Diplomas provide high quality work related
    learning whilst building knowledge and
    understanding.
  • Do universities accept them? The jury is out!

A levels Heathside Sixth Form
  • A levels 4 modules, A.remain the best way
    forward
  • 5 A - C passes
  • Grade B in subject you wish to study
  • In Year 12 4 AS subjects
  • In Year 13 3 A2 subjects
  • High retention rate 12 into 13
  • High of first choice University places

HOW TO APPLY TO HEATHSIDE
  • Assembly and Open Evening
  • Prospectus will be posted home
  • Closing date in December
  • Interviews in Jan/Feb 2010
  • Induction
  • Results day

Apprenticeships
  • Lead towards specific occupations
  • Combines paid work with on the job training,
    qualifications and progression
  • Apprentices normally combine work based
    qualification with an NVQ leading to BTEC or City
    and Guilds Award.
  • See Natalie Taylor a lot of apprenticeships
    available locally!

  • Carillion construction (not plumbing or
    electrical)
  • NB childcare health and social care
  • MIT Re-mit mechanics
  • Way to Work accountancy, business admin,
    customer services, retailing, warehousing
  • In-Training business admin, warehousing,
    customer service, retail, team leading, IT
  • Heathrow apprenticeships engineering, retail,
    construction
  • If you get less than level 1 and are interested
    in pursuing work then there are E2E courses
    available at Brooklands, NACRO In-Training

  • GCSEs count!
  • What are you interested in?
  • Explore these options
  • Choose an option and have another as a back-up
  • Apply for 2 courses if necessary
  • For colleges this is now and no later than
    Christmas.
  • For apprenticeships you need to think of applying
    for at least one by Christmas
  • You need to approach employers now!
