REVIVAL Objective
  • The global objective is to show that tertiary
    buildings from the post-war pre-energy conscious
    era, can be refurbished economically, with
    improvements in energy performance that lead to
    lower life-cycle CO2 emissions than the original
    building, or an equivalent new building. Thus
    refurbishment would make a significant
    contribution towards the EU policy of meeting the
    Kyoto protocol.

Objective WP9
  • To identify a life-cycle CO2 assessment
    procedure which is sensitive to the emissions
    associated with the manufacture of materials,
    transportation to site, construction, energy in
    use and maintenance, final demolition and
    disposal of wastes.
  • To apply it to the refurbishment of the existing
    building and make comparisons with the reference
    case of demolition and new-build.
  • To assess and report on general environmental
    results of refurbishment

The following reference values can be used
  •   Good It can be considered as the performance
    of the best 25 buildings on the building stock.
    Can also be considered as a value typical of the
    requirements of energy performance regulations
    for new buildings,

  • Typical Also called Building stock reference.
    This corresponds to the energy performance
    reached by approximately 50 of the national or
    regional building stock (median value).
  •  
  • The reference values are defined at the national
    or regional level.

Conclusions preliminary results
  • Besides lower initial CO2 emissions, in 2 cases
    the renovated REVIVAL Building has lower annual
    CO2 emissions than the Newbuild equivalent, due
    to lower annual energy use (Albatros
    Daneshill).
  • In all cases the renovated REVIVAL building shows
    lower CO2 emissions than the existing building
    within the first 5 years.
