Anti-Smoking Laws
2
History of Tobacco Smoking
  • Smoking tobacco goes back thousands of years.
Around 1500 years ago, the tobacco smoking is
    depicted in early Mayan art.

3
Nicotine and addiction
  • Nicotine is one of the main factors leading to
the continued tobacco smoking. Nicotine, like any
stimulant, can also increase anxiety and
    restlessness.

4
Health Effect of Smoking
  • The health effects of smoking refer to direct
smoking as well as second hand smoke. Second hand
smoke is more harmful then smoke yourself.
Smoking also increases the chance of heart
disease, such as heart attach or stroke.

5
Primary Risks of Smoking
  • The main health risks in tobacco pertain to
diseases of the cardiovascular (???)system, in
particular smoking being a major risk factor for
heart attack, and cancer, particularly lung
    cancer.

The incidence of lung cancer is highly correlated
with smoking.

Tobacco Use is Growing in an Alarming Rate
One-Third of the Worlds Population Smokes Tobacco

  • 20 years from now-1.64 billion smokers (up 31)

Outdoor Smoking Bans in the U.S.
  • California (U.S.A) has designated certain
areas, such as all public schools and even
prisons, as "tobacco-free" zones, where the
possession of tobacco in any form (whether by
students, parents, teachers, or others) is
strictly prohibited indoors and outdoors. The
sale and advertisement of tobacco is banned
    within 1000 feet (300 m) of educational
    facilities.

This sign at a public park in California
prohibits smoking at or around an outdoor
children's playground area. State law prohibits
smoking within 25 feet (8 m) of such areas.
