Jesus gave the apostles the mission of baptizing
and evangelizing the world, and instituted his
Church with a hierarchy to continue that mission
after the death of the Apostles.
4
Ice Breaker Evangelizing!
  • Each person should select a partner
  • We are going to pretend that your partner is not
Catholic and just said this to you
  • I wish my family believed in something, what do
    Catholics believe?
  • You have 3 minutes to answer
  • Now switch listeners and speakers
  • Still pretending your partner is not Catholic,
lets say that they just said this to you
  • What is the point of having religion, what does
    it do for anyone?
  • You have 3 minutes to answer

5
Small Group Discussion Breaking it Down
  • What did your partner say that made an impact on
    you?
  • What did your partner say that you disagree with?
  • Was your partner convincing?
  • What are some of the things Catholics believe?
  • What does our faith give to us (do for us)?

6
In your small groups take turns reading Chapter 6
7
The First Successor
  • Scriptures foretold that Judas would betray Jesus
and that his position should be taken by another.
  • The Apostles selected two men who had witnessed
what they did from Jesus baptism to his
    resurrection
  • After determining themselves that both were
worthy, they cast lots (basically flipped a coin)
to allow God to choose through chance.
  • The lots fell for Matthias instead of Justus and
Matthias took Judas spot as an Apostle.

8
Apostolic Succession
  • The Apostles knowing that the work of the Church
needed to continue beyond their own lives, chose
    people to continue their work.
  • The line of succession remains unbroken to this
day all the way back to the original Apostles
  • This is guaranteed by the fact that two Bishops
    ordain the new Bishop.
  • Due to the need of the Church to govern so many
diocese, the number of bishops have grown to
5,123 between Latin and Eastern Churches (All
    Catholic).
  • There is only 1 Successor of Peter, only 1 Pope
(There have been 265 from Peter to Benedict XVI)

Bishops
  • The Church is divided up into geographical
    regions called diocese.
  • The Pope, for instance, is the Bishop of the
    diocese of Rome.
  • We are in the Arch Diocese of Boston.
  • An Arch Diocese is an important diocese, usually
the oldest in a given area.
  • Its leader is called an archbishop
  • An archbishop has the same duties as a bishop but
also helps other local dioceses work together.
  • Cardinal Sean OMalley is the current Archbishop
    of Boston.

11
Cardinals
  • You may be wondering why we call our Archbishop
    Cardinal OMalley instead of Archbishop
    OMalley
  • The title of Cardinal is an honor bestowed by the
Pope (it is not a part of Holy Orders) that
includes a few added responsibilities including
the election of a new Pope should the old Pope
    resign or die.
  • Most often, but not always, cardinals are
selected from men who are Bishops

12
Priests
  • The bishop cant possibly meet every need of the
    diocese by himself.
  • The bishop shares his power and authority by
    ordaining priests.
  • A priest can ordinarily celebrate five of the
    seven sacraments Baptism, Eucharist,
    Reconciliation, Marriage, and Anointing
  • A priest needs permission to celebrate
    Confirmation
  • A Priest cannot celebrate Holy Orders, only the
    Bishop

13
Roles of Priests
  • Father Stephen Donohoe is the Pastor of our
parish. On behalf the bishop, he takes care of
    this Church.
  • Father William Dunn is the Parochial Vicar, whose
job is to help the Pastor in serving the parish.
  • A priest shares in the teaching office of the
bishop by giving instruction in his parish
    (homilies).
  • A priest has administrative duties in the parish
like caring for the building and recording
    sacraments.

14
Deacons
  • Deacon Jack Bortz is the deacon at our parish.
  • There are two types of deacon
  • Permanent May be married when ordained but may
not re-marry if his wife dies. Doesnt plan to
    be ordained a priest.
  • Transitional A deacon who plans to become a
    priest and cannot marry.
  • Deacons can baptize and celebrate weddings and
    funerals
  • A Deacon does not have the power to forgive sins
    or consecrate the Eucharist.
  • He is however, to be a servant at the altar and
    an ordinary minister of communion.
  • Deacons share in the teaching ministry of the
Church through reading the Gospel and giving
    homilies.
  • A deacon has a special care for the poor,
counseling and practicing works of mercy for the
    diocese.

15
Monsignor
  • This is an honorary title given by the Pope to
priests who have given faithful service in the
promotion of the Church, often in the service of
education, founding a parish, or serving on
committees for the good of the church.

16
Electing a Pope
  • When a Pope dies or resigns, a conclave is called
and all the cardinals from around the world
    gather at the Vatican
  • They meet in the Sistine Chapel to elect a new
Pope. This is called a conclave.
  • During this time, black smoke is seen coming from
a chimney to indicate that the conclave is in
    session.
  • The cardinals cannot meet with people from the
outside world and must prayerfully elect a new
    Pope.
  • When the new Pope is elected, white smoke rises
    from the chimney.

17
Conclaves
  • The History of Conclaves
  • Subtitles will have to do, this is a brilliant
    explanation.
