Title: Changing Pop. Trends

1
Changing Pop. Trends
  • Chapter 9-2

2
Brain Food
  • Life expectancy has increased dramatically over
the past century in more-developed countries.
Life expectancy in Britain went from 48 for males
    in 1901 to 75 in 2000 and from 49 to 80 for
females in the same time period. In the united
States live expectancy has reached over 74 for
males and over 80 for females.

3
What kinds of problems are caused by rapid human
population growth?
  • Environmental problems
  • Resources are used at a high rates
  • Overwhelmed infrastructure
  • Infrastructure - is the basic facilities and
services that support a community ( water
supplies, sewer, power, roads, subways, schools,
    and hospitals)

4
3 basic needs of all people
  • Clean water
  • Burnable fuel
  • Land for food
  • These are the things most affected by rapid
    population growth

5
Specific problems of rapid growth
  • Shortage of fuel wood. Over pop. areas use all
    trees, not just dead branches.
  • Africa, Asia and India
  • Water and food cant be heated if wood supplies
are low, causing disease and malnutrition

6
  • Unsafe water.
  • Water for drinking is also used for washing,
sewage disposal, causing dysentery, typhoid and
cholera. Ex. Rio Grande (Mexico/US boarder) and
    Lima, Peru (cholera epidemic 91)
  • 1 billion people lacked safe water in 2001
  • 3 million died of diseases from water in 2001

7
  • Land -
  • Shortage of arable land - land for growing crops.
  • Land competition between housing, growing food,
and natural habitats. Ex. Egypts Nile River
    valley
  • The world is undergoing urbanization - more
people living in cities than rural areas

8
  • US cities are becoming large metropolitana areas
    - people live in suburban areas but work in the
    cities.
  • Problems
  • Traffic jams, inadequate infrastructure, less
    farm land, less habitat.

9
A demographically diverse world
  • Not all countries are developing or undeveloped.
  • Some have modern industries but low incomes.
  • Some have stable pop. and education without
    industrialization.
  • Some have rapid pop. growth, but are unable to
    improve ed. or economics.
  • Least developed countries - not developing, high
death rate, high birth rates. U.N. is giving aid
to them to help with their problems.

10
Growth rates
  • Relatively stable Pop. Europe, U.S., Canada,
Russia, South Korea, Thailand, China, Japan,
    Australia, and New Zeland.
  • Growing Pop. Asia, contains most of the worlds
    pop.

11
Growth is slowing
  • Human pop. is now over 6 billion.
  • Demographers predict growth will continue to
    slow.
  • Most countries will reach replacement level
fertility rates by 2050 with a world pop. of 9
    billion.
