Title: Hypnotic Phenomena

1
Hypnotic Phenomena
  • Keys to hypnotic intervention
  • Molly DeLaney, PsyD
  • Hypnovations Basic Clinical Hypnosis Workshop
    2010

2
  • Hypnotic Phenomena are common, everyday human
    behaviors
  • They are labeled hypnotic because they
  • spontaneously appear during trance
    states
  • and are largely unconscious that is,
    outside of conscious awareness

3
  • Everyday examples of hypnotic phenomena are
  • Amnesia (forgetfulness)
  • Age regression (e.g., acting silly)
  • Time distortion (e.g., time feels very short or
    very long)
  • Dissociation (e.g., not paying attention to the
    pain of a hang nail)

4
  • Hypnotic Phenomena continued
  • Age Progression (e.g., worrying about the future)
  • Hypernesia (e.g., extreme sensitivity)
  • Positive Hallucination (e.g. perceiving something
    that isnt there)
  • Negative Hallucination (e.g. not perceiving
    something that is there)

5
Utilizing hypnotic phenomena
  • When treating a patient, imagine what it is that
you want to happen with them.
  • How can experiences such as amnesia, shortening
or lengthening time or dissociation be
potentially useful in helping to create change or
    alleviate suffering?
  • E.g., when inserting an IV, you can evoke
hypnotic phenomena that will make the procedure
easier for you and the patient through attention,
    distraction and language.
