Deformity
  • Scoliosis (Greek word Skoliosis crookedness),
    Sideward curvature of spine
  • Kyphosis - Forward bending of spine

3
Causes
  • Congenital By birth
  • Idiopathic unknown causes usually in
    adolescent age group
  • Neuromuscular secondary to polio or cerebral
    palsy
  • Others Tuberculosis (T.B.), trauma
  • (common cause in India )

4
Scoliosis patient
  • Early stage
  • Experiences pain at early stages (school days)
  • Deformity creates inferiority complex among peer
    circles
  • Child withdraws from activities, even drops out
    of school
  • Progressive Stages
  • Back pain severity increases
  • Gait changes due to abnormal shoulder and hip
    levels
  • Adaptation to very low physical activities and
    also underperformance in academics
  • Advanced
  • Grotesque deformities physical disabilities
  • Respiratory (breathing) problems due to reduced
    chest capacity
  • Malnourishment due to digestive problems and
    reduced intake
  • Neurologic problems weakness in legs, loss of
    bowel and bladder control
  • Unfortunately 90 patients come to treatment at
    Advanced stage for treatment

5
Scoliosis as a problem
  • Average incidence of 1 to 1.6
  • No central registry exists in India
  • Majority accepts the disability and starts living
compromised life style due to lack of proper
    knowledge and facilities for treatment
  • Early diagnosis and treatment are the key
  • Early correction reduces the cost and limits the
    disability
  • Early correction allows patient to lead
    productive life.
  • Lack of expertise and general awareness about
    deformities compounding the problem
  • Very few have expertise to deal with such problems

Scoliosis treatment hurdles
  • Majority of advanced deformity patients are poor
  • Cost of the treatment very high 8 -10,000 US
  • Very high cost of implants US 4000 on an
    average
  • Done only in multi specialty Hospital
  • Very few trained surgeons
  • Brought down cost to USD 3K, beneficiary pays
only USD 1 K (That also covered by NGO at times),
that is 1/10th of original cost.
  • Manipal brought doctors and multi specialty care
    facilities on table.
  • Sukriya brought expertise in post operation care
    and rehabilitation on table.
