of school - Progressive Stages
- Back pain severity increases
- Gait changes due to abnormal shoulder and hip

also underperformance in academics - Advanced
- Grotesque deformities physical disabilities

compromised life style due to lack of proper
knowledge and facilities for treatment - Early diagnosis and treatment are the key
- Early correction reduces the cost and limits the
disability - Early correction allows patient to lead

- Mr. Mohan , 22years old/male, diagnosis to have

has studied SSLC (10th) and was working in a
shop. He developed gradual onset of back pain and
worsened in the recent months and was unable to
do his routine activities. He was tilting and
losing balance. The correction surgery will help
him in regaining the balance and he will be back
to work as store assistant. He is a Native of
Tumkur, earning monthly Rs.2000/- (USD 40/
month). - Satyanarayana , aged 22years , is born with
multiple deficiencies. He cannot hear and speak.
He has deformed chest cavity adding to this he
has severe scoliosis which is causing imbalance.
His IQ was assessed and after confirming that he
can be rehabilitated to a functionally
independent person, correction of scoliosis is
undertaken. Clinically his curve has been
corrected and doing well post operatively. His
father a poor farmer cannot afford treatment for
any of his ailments.

9Scoliosis treatment hurdles
- Majority of advanced deformity patients are poor
- Cost of the treatment very high 8 -10,000 US
- Very high cost of implants US 4000 on an
average - Done only in multi specialty Hospital
- Very few trained surgeons
- Brought down cost to USD 3K, beneficiary pays
only USD 1 K (That also covered by NGO at times),
that is 1/10th of original cost. - Manipal brought doctors and multi specialty care
facilities on table. - Sukriya brought expertise in post operation care
and rehabilitation on table.
