1
Energy sector activities and Plans in the DPRK
  • (presentation by the DPRK delegation)
  • May,13-16, 2005, AES Workshop, Beijing

2
Past Activities
  • Until late 20th century, priority was given to
building an independent power industry based on
    coal and hydraulic resources
  • Coal deposit 4.3 Gtoes, Hydraulic resources 49
Twh, wind power resources approx. 26 Twh
  • Till the end of last century, coal was considered
to be a major energy resources
  • Coal accounted for 80 of total domestic energy
consumption, of which 50-60 were used for
generating electricity and the rest for
    industries and population

3
Urgent requirements for energy security in 21st
Century
  • Upgrade existing coal-fired power plants -which
were built in 60s and 70s
  • Find a solution to satisfy diverse energy needs
    and to ensure energy security

4
Measures followed to meet energy needs
  • Built self-reliant nuclear power industry
  • Enormous investment made for the construction of
    environment-friendly hydraulic power stations
  • Priority given to the large-sized hydro power
plants in construction projects, along with a
massive campaign to build small- and medium-
    sized plants
  • Stepped up technical modernization of existing
    thermal power plants

5
  • Consequently, coal consumption reduced down to
    60
  • Hydro power consumption increased 40 from
    previous 20
  • Generating ratio of thermal power to hydro power
currently stands at 46 (previously 55)

6
  • Technical renovation of thermo power plants
  • Increase conversion rate
  • Continue construction of various types of hydro
    power plants
  • Optimal use of wind power

7
Plans for utilization of various energy resources
  • -Hydro power energy
  • Goal is to increase turbine efficiency up to 96
  • Build new hydro power plants
  • Continue construction of 5kw small wind power
stations in rural and remote areas
  • Develop a new technology to manufacture 100kw
    wind power plants

8
  • Encourage joint venture with developed countries
to manufacture over 500kw capacity wind power
    plants
  • -Tidal power energy
  • New energy resources of special priority
  • Field survey already finished on areas where
large potentials of wind power exist
  • In-depth research on wind condition in these
areas currently underway assisted by the
    International Environmental TV Group(NGO), which
    provided wind log
  • Plans are to complete construction of ongoing
tidal power plant for demonstration, develop a
cross-flowing turbines with over 65 efficiency

9
Energy saving measures
  • Constant work has been done for the introduction
and application of energy saving technology
  • High efficiency in energy transportation is an
important factor to ensure national and
    provincial energy security
  • Coal transportation was done mainly by either
    train or truck
  • Reduction of transportation and power
transmission distance is an effective way to
    increase transportation efficiency

10
Transportation efficiency
  • Feasibility study took place with the help of
    enterprise relocation program and electricity
    calculation program
  • Based on the final result of feasibility study
enterprises are expected to be redeployed in the
    future

11
Upgrading power transmission system
  • With the aim of promoting balanced development
at provincial level and efficient energy
    distribution
  • Considerable investment made for the improvement
of power transmission system in a more reasonable
    way
  • Investment made also to increase transmission
voltage and to maintain an uniform output voltage
    of 2.2kv

12
Efficient central heating system to address
tension created in coal supply and demand
  • Research work underway focusing on how to
intensify heat insulation mechanism and decrease
    co-efficiency of heat loss down to 0.35 w/m2 k
  • It is envisaged to cut down drastically the
volume of carbon dioxide deflation from thermo
power plants for cleaner district heating
  • A shift from existing direct heating system into
    indirect heating system is planned
  • Further attention will be directed to overall
technical renovation of facilities in energy
    sectors
