Congress on June 14, 1777.
The flag had 13 stars and thirteen stripes.

  colonies.
• The 50 stars represent the 50 states.

each new state.
This is the flag the flew over Fort McHenry
during the War of 1812. It inspired the national
anthem, The Star Spangled Banner.
