Flowers in Bloom
2
Problem Statement
  • Which stemmed flower last the longest in water?

3
Hypothesis
  • If a rose, carnation, and tulip are placed in a
vase with water then the carnation will last
    longer without soil.

4
Materials
  • Three types of flowers a rose, tulip and a
    carnation
  • Three vases
  • Water

5
Procedures
  • Fill each vase the same amount of water- to ¼
    full
  • With scissors, snip a small chuck of the stems
off at an angle for each stem
  • Put a single stem of a rose, carnation, and a
    tulip in a separate vases
  • Change the water every 48 hours
  • Observe each type of flower for 1 week

6
Variables
  • Independent
  • the type of flower
  • Dependent
  • The number of days till flower wilts
  • Constant
  • the vases , amount of water

Results
  • After observing the 3 different types of flowers
for a period of 1 week the following was the
    outcome
  • On day 4 the tulip began to wilt.
  • On day 5 the rose wilted.
  • On day 7 the carnation did not completely wilt
but began to show signs of deteriorating.

11
Conclusion
  • My hypothesis was correct. When three types of
flowers were placed in a vase with water and
observed over a period of 7 days the carnation
    lasted the longest without soil.

12
Application
  • This information can be useful if someone was
buying flowers for a gift. The carnation would be
better because the carnation lasts longer and one
    would get their monies worth.
  • It can also be helpful when making a decision on
when to purchase a specific type of flower for a
special event. For example, a bride might select
a rose as her flower of preference for her
arrangements. A florist can use this information
to know when to purchase the merchandise they
need. The florist will know to buy it no earlier
than 3 days prior to the event.
