Russian History
  • Over several thousand years, many people have
    invaded and settled in what is now Russia (from
    all over Europe and Asia).
  • In the 800s, the Vikings set up a kingdom near
    the city of Kiev (now in the Ukraine), and most
    of the people became Christian.
  • In the 1200s, the Mongols invaded from Asia, and
    ruled for 300 years.
  • In the 1400s, Ivan III (the Great) ruled from a
    small kingdom near Moscow. He began to fight the
    Mongols, and called his new country Russia.
  • Ivan the IV (the Terrible) destroyed the Mongol
    settlements near the Volga River, and gained the
    land to the Ural Mts. He was the first ruler to
    be called czar (Latin- caesar).

  • In the 1500s, traders, soldiers, and merchants
    moved into Siberia (the part of Russia in Asia).
  • In the 1600s, Russians reached the Pacific
    Ocean.
  • In the 1700s, Russia claimed Alaska.
  • In 1812, they had trading posts in California
  • and later sold Alaska to the United States.

  • The czars became the supreme rulers had
    absolute power

More Russian History
  • In 1905, Russia lost a war with Japan. The people
    of Russia began to see how weak their czar
    (Nicholas II) was, and wanted to create a law
    making body.
  • By 1917, Nicholas II was forced to give up his
    throne.
  • Russian Revolution
  • - Lenin came to power and communism began under
    a country known as the Soviet Union (U.S.S.R)
  • By 1991, communism was a complete failure and
    Russia became a country again.
