Title: The Ray Model of Light

1
The Ray Model of Light
2
Light and Matter
  • In the ray model of light, light is represented
    as straight lines called rays
  • Ray diagrams are diagrams that show the path that
light takes after it leaves its source
  • Each ray ends with an arrow to indicate its
    direction

3
Light and Matter
  • Some materials let the light pass
    through-Transmit light
  • Some materials absorb light
  • Some materials reflect light
  • The properties of matter determine what happens
    to the light

4
Light and Matter
  • Materials are classified according to how they
    transmit, absorb, and reflect light.
  • Transparent materials ? clear glass or clear
plastic ? transmit light freely ( little
    absorption and little reflection)

Light and Matter
  • Transparent materials ? clear glass or clear
plastic ? transmit light freely ( little
    absorption and little reflection)

Clear glass
6
Light and Matter
  • Translucent materials ? frosted window ? transmit
some light ( some light can pass through, but you
can not see what is on the other side of the
    frosted glass in any detail)

frosted glass
7
Light and Matter
  • Opaque materials? absorb and reflect light, but
they do not transmit it !!! ( prevent light from
    going through)

opaque glass
8
Shadows
  • Shadows occur when an opaque object blocks the
direct light from a light source

shadow
9
Light Reflection
  • You can see objects because light reflects off
    surfaces !!!
  • Incoming light rays travel parallel to each other

Light rays parallel to each other
10
Light Reflection
  • 2 types of reflection
  • Regular Reflection ? light rays strike a smooth
surface and reflect in the same direction,
staying parallel to one another ? reflects an
    image
  • Diffuse reflection ? light rays reflect off a
rough or uneven surface but are scattered in
different directions ? does not reflect an image
