Title: Cellular Respiration II

1
Cellular Respiration II
  • IB Biology

2
Oxidation
  • Involves the loss of electrons from an element
  • Also frequently involves gaining an oxygen or
    losing hydrogen

PS II
Oxidation of H2O

Oxidative Phosphorylation
  • The oxidative part refers to the process in the
presence of oxygen (as final electron receptor in
    the ETC)
  • The phosphorylation part refers to the addition
of an inorganic phosphate (Pi) to ADP in order to
    produce ATP
  • Uses ATP Synthase enzyme
  • Occurs only in cellular respiration

5
Mitochondrial Structure/Function
  • Cristae form a large membrane surface area for
    the ETC
  • Small space between inner and outer membranes for
    the accumulation of protons
  • Fluid matrix containing enzymes for Krebs Cycle

6
Lysis and Link Reaction
  • Glycolysis is the cutting or breaking of the
6-carbon glucose into two 3-carbon pyruvates
  • Each 3-carbon pyruvate undergoes a link
reaction to form a 2-carbon acetyl CoA so that
it can bond to the 4-carbon oxaloacetate to make
a 6-carbon molecule to start the Krebs Cycle.
