The Beatitudes
  • Primary recipients were the disciples but they
    are given to everyone else who is present.
  • Like Moses, Jesus goes up a mountain/mount but
    instead of receiving the Law, Jesus speaks the
    Law just as God did.
  • They are promises of happiness that have already
    been given or about to be received the gift is
    the kingdom of heaven.
  • 1st 4 about the poor, next 4 about our neighbour.

Salt and Light
  • The image of salt and light are the mission of
    the disciples.
  • Salt is necessary for food and the witness of the
    disciples are essential.
  • Light, once received must shine forth.

The Law and the Prophets
  • This begins a series of contrasts between the Law
    of the prophets and Jesus teaching
  • Jesus does not abolish the Torah, but rather he
    gives it its deepest meaning.
  • Jesus doesnt take away the Old Testament.

Concerning Anger
  • New interpretation to the fifth commandment.
  • Every angry impulse is as damnable as murder
  • Affirms that humanity is precious

Concerning Adultery and Divorce
  • Jesus connects the 6th commandment to the 9th
    (text has an error 10th ) commandment.
  • Jesus presents a teaching on sexuality and
    marriage. Coveting is just as bad as committing
    the act.
  • Tearing out ones eyes is to be taken
    metaphorically.

Concerning Oaths
  • Jesus give a new interpretation on the Jewish
    custom of making oaths (pronouncing them in the
    Name of God.).
  • Gods Holy Name is not to be used.
  • Jesus insists on giving and keeping your word.

Concerning Retaliation
  • An eye for an eye
  • Jesus encourages us to respond to evil with good.
  • Jesus encourages us to turn the other cheek and
    give everything.

Love for Enemies
  • Jesus redefines love for neighbour as a gesture
    of good to all including your enemy.
  • We are called to refrain from doing harm and to
    imitate the Father.

Concerning Almsgiving
  • Jesus talks about true religion correct
    behaviour toward the Father.
  • Almsgiving, prayer and fasting (penance).
  • We are called to perform acts of piety to please
    God and not to display them for win favour with
    others.

Concerning Prayer
  • Jesus gives us the Our Father.
  • Abba Father Daddy
  • The prayer is addressed to the Father but the
    second part focuses on us bringing up human
    concerns.

Concerning Fasting
  • Fasting and penance is to be done privately as it
    is intended for the Father and not for others.

Concerning Treasures and Worry
  • Jesus teaches us how to seek the Kingdom of God.
  • The treasure is the instruction of Jesus and the
    glory of the Father.
  • This section reflects on dealing with earthly
    worries in light of the real treasure the
    Kingdom of God.

Judging Others
  • The four exhortations
  • Dont Judge
  • Dont give sacred things to dogs
  • Ask and you shall receive
  • Follow the Golden Rule (summary of the Sermon on
    the Mount)

The Narrow Gate
  • Dont follow the masses (the herd) make a
    personal choice to enter the narrow gate of
    Jesus teachings.
  • Beware of false prophets true prophets are the
    ones doing the work of God.
