Title: A WWW Response Using Internet Technology to a Global Problem: Family Violence
1A WWW ResponseUsing Internet Technology to a
Global ProblemFamily Violence
Presented at the 6th Annual Conference on Family
Violence Prevention Treatment October 9,
1998By Kathy Belew, MSW, MPH
2Introduction
- Family Violence is a public health concern
- Outcomes and Quality services are being demanded
- Funds are diminishing to support our efforts
- There is a recognized need for fluid seamless
integration of services among multi-disciplines - Need Accurate, consistent, useful info
Downsizing of organizations yet demand increases
for quality. Common tools currently available
work at the instance level but we seek to work
at the schema level. Decision-making paradigm
of organizations Significance of hierarchical
structures Need for business process
reengineering Leads to centralized structures We
would like fluid seamless integration Need
Accurate, consistent, useful info
3Goals
- To empower communities through technology
- Get more people involved communicating
- Educate and improve understanding
- To market what we do well
- To promote policies that address the causes of
Family Violence- not just treating symptoms - To reinforce that no one agency or person can be
an expert or solve complex problems of family
violence- must collaborate across agencies - To demonstrate the value of Family Violence
Agency Web sites
4GIS
- View Big Picture combining spatial
presentations and spreadsheet databases - Geographical Info Systems (GIS) gives
statistics a graphical look for better decisions - Combine Census Data w/ organization data for
spatial analysis - Interpret information quickly, easily, clearly
- Grasp data significance faster
- Target efforts with limited funds
5Image Technology
- Digitize data and images
- Thumbnails for Overview
- Capture, store, present, share digital
images linked to info - Key Word Search to find group
- Executable e-mail files
- Digital Cameras Video Conference
- Write CD-ROMS
6What is Multimedia?
- Multimedia is a general term where user is
more passive - Multimedia systems use interactive techniques
of hypertext media in nonlinear fashion -
-
7What is Hypermedia?
- Over 40 years old
- Hypermedia are hypertext systems that use other
formats in addition to text - Images- GIF, JPEG
- Animation- MPEG, QuickTime
- Video- MPEG, QuickTime
- Audio- WAV, MPEG
- Accessible to large users providers at same
time - WWW is example of a dynamic hypermedia system
8Hypermedia Documents
- Hypermedia Documents accessible through hypertext
links - Link to another part of the same document or to
any computer on the Internet, CD-ROM, LAN,
Network or PC Hard drive - WWW is collection of pages containing hypertext
links on Internet - Combine media file of numerous types
9Uses for Hypermedia?
- Document Management- Policy Manuals
- Remote Conferencing
- Connect practitioners for real-time consults
- Interactive Forms
- Tying Databases in seamless integration
- Education Training
- Consultation team collaboration
- Decision Support
10Internet Technology
- Browser
- Netscape, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mosaic,
Lynx - HTTP- HyperText Transport Protocol
- HTML- HyperText Markup Language
- Special codes or tags that make the document
readable by a browser - Common Software Programs Automatically Convert to
HTML
11World Wide Web (WWW)
- A subset of the Internet
- A system of documents (pages) linked together
electronically - Pages containing hypermedia
- Graphics
- Sound
- Video Clips
- Animation
- Regular Text
12Standardization
- One Button publish ease of use
- HTML single language for programmers
- GUI single program for users to learn
- Web browsers for every type of computer
- Eliminates problems of different hardware and
software talking to each other - Remote access- interactive and participative
- More Efficient and effective for info sharing
13Demo Examples
- Instant Scanned Documents for sharing Demo
- Demo Digital Photos Captured from Camera
- Demo of Photo Quality PDF Documents Scanned to be
Read from a Free Reader - Automatic Interactive Forms Database Creation
Demo - Demo Images captured catalogued
- CD-ROM Interactive Search Demo
- How these can be used for building Quality
Casemanagement Tools
14Common Gateway Interface?
- CGI is standard for interfacing external
applications w/ Web servers - Executed in real time
- CGI program transmits info to database engine
getting results it displays back to client - C or Fortran must compile program
- Perl or Unix script resides in cgi-bin
directory- easier to debug, modify, maintain
15New Management Skills Required
- From paper-based to electronic documentation
requires planning - Electronic texts offer new ways to store,
retrieve, update, and cross-link info - Hypermedia documents cross-linked via keywords
and integration of audio and video files - As documents become ALIVE, managers must control
access, privileges, interconnections, editing
16Real Life
- Many organizations program months or years when
there is boxed software available that does more
and easier to use - Innovators not in the computer program department
are seen as stepping on turf - Casemanagers need to work smarter with fewer
resources and greater needs - Solution Internet Technology
17What This Means
- Managers need to invest more into Information
Resources - Internet Technology is a way to solve problems of
downsizing, make better decisions for quality,
and give outcomes - Strategic Benefits
- Quicker Access to Info Faster Client Response
- Improved Productivity
- Changing Attitudes through Education
- Efficient Knowledge Workers
- Saves Public
18My Charge to You!
- Stay informed
- Dont be afraid to try something new
- Step out of the box
- Question Authority
- Do your part to help develop casemanagement
tools - Advocate for more investment in technology
- Be aware of software and hardware available and
evolving - Keep trying to inform others to listen
19The End
