Title: Mathematical Literacy

Mathematical Literacy
  •
  • Mathematical literacy is closely related to
literacy. While literacy is the foundation for
all learning, mathematical literacy is also
necessary if we are to understand fully the
information that surrounds us in modern society.
  • Leading Math Success, Mathematical Literacy
Grades 7-12. The Report of the Expert Panel on
    Student Success in Ontario, 2004.
  •

Teach Reading Who Me?
  • The key to information literacy is critical
thinking. Students need to know what questions
to ask themselves, and what questions to ask of
    the information.
  • Reading is a problem-solving task, a unique skill
that requires direct instruction to do it well.
  • We need to use strategies with students
  • Before reading/learning to help students
    connect to prior knowledge
  • During reading/learning to help students make
sense of what they are reading
  • After reading/learning to help students review
and consolidate the main ideas and concepts
  •                   excerpts from Reaching Higher,
    YRDSB, 2001

  • Do you use these words during daily instruction
    and assessment?
  • posted on a word wall with examples?
  • a match-up task terms with definitions?

Building Trust A Key Component
  • We build trust when we
  • establish routines no surprises
  • create structure no down time
  • build math talk time into every task no
    embarrassment
  • We build trust and independence when we
  • go first teacher models
  • have pairs go next students share
  • have individuals go last individuals practise

Remember
  • Every day is a new day.
  • Youre the only one who remembers the bad days.
  • Three steps forward, two steps back sometimes
four steps back but you will move ahead this
    stuff works!
  • No matter what happens in class, next year they
will happily greet you in the hall.
  •

  • Good for all,
  • necessary for some.
