Over the Counter
  • Sold legally in pharmacies and other stores
    without a doctors prescription.
  • Examples
  • Aspirin
  • Cold and cough remedies
  • Sleep aids

Prescription
  • Can be obtained only with a written order from a
    doctor and can be purchased only at a pharmacy.
  • Doctor determines the correct amount of
    medication that the individual needs at the time
    the prescription is written.

Illegal
  • A chemical substance that people of any age may
    not lawfully manufacture, possess, buy or sell.
  • Also called street drugs.

Drug Misuse
  • Improper use of medicines either prescription or
    over the counter.
  • Examples
  • Taking more than the prescribed amount
  • Taking at wrong times of the day
  • Is often a mistake or a patients misunderstanding
    of doctors orders.

Drug Abuse
  • Intentionally used improperly or unsafely.
  • Example
  • Abusing painkillers
  • Abusing over the counter medicines
  • Use them to get a high instead of curing a pain
    or cough

  • Side effects-an unwanted physical or mental
    effect caused by a drug.

  • A person dependent on a drug, stops taking the
    drug and will develop withdrawal symptoms which

  • Fever
  • Digestion problems
