  • Connector
  • Fe, Cu, Mg, Ag, Na, K, Al, Au
  • Use your periodic table to identify the metals
    listed above.
  • List the metals in order of reactivity, starting
    with the most reactive.
  • Explain why gold and silver are found native in
the Earths crust, but aluminium and iron are not.

Key Question
  • How is this lesson relevant to every day life?
  • What skills will you be developing this lesson?
  • Scientific Investigation- by Research and
    collecting secondary data, planning and
collecting primary data, Analysis and Evaluation.
  • Numeracy- by using formulae in calculations
  • Literacy- by writing well structured sentences
    and paragraphs
  • ICT- by using Laptops and electronic resources
  • Personal skills- team work, leadership
  • Thinking and Learning- organisation, logic,
    participation, memory, exploration, creativity,
    judgement, planning, practice.
  • Reflection- through self or peer assessment of
    each Learning Outcome
  • Quick Discussion
  • What do you already know?

Keywords
Here are some of the words we will be using this
lesson 1) Create sentences which use the
keywords correctly. 2) Put your hand up if there
is any key word from the list that you dont know
the meaning of.
  • tarnish
  • rust
  • corrode
  • native
  • oxidation

6
Learning Activities for Outcome 1
The corrosion of metals
CORROSION is the gradual destruction of metal by
the effect of water, chemicals etc.
7
Tarnish
Rust
Rusting is a form of corrosion that affects only
iron and steel.
Tarnishing is a form of corrosion.  The metal
becomes dull and loses its colour.
8
Demonstration Investigating the rusting of iron
Look at the information given. What causes the
iron nail to rust? Explain/justify your answer.
9
Rusting of iron
Both air and water are needed for iron to rust.
Rusting is an oxidation reaction. The iron
reacts with water and oxygen to form hydrated
iron(III) oxide, which we see as rust. iron
water oxygen    ?    hydrated
iron(III)
oxide
Note You dont need to know the symbol equation
its rather complicated!
10
Demonstrate your Learning for Outcome 1
To know the difference between rusting and
corrosion
Evaluate (A) I can Justify the causes of rusting
based on experimental results.
Analyse (B) I can Distinguish between rusting and
corrosion
Apply (C) I can Identify the causes of rusting.
Understand (D) I can Explain the difference
between rusting and corrosion

13
Learning Activities for Outcome 2
  • Research Task 1 - Comparing the properties of
    aluminium and iron
  • Aluminium and iron are typical metals with many
    uses.
  • What properties do they have in common?
  • Below are some of the properties by which they
    differ.
  • For each property describe their differences and
suggest whether these differences are an
advantage or disadvantage. Give an example of a
    common use for each advantage.
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Density
  • Magnetic
  • Cost

Demonstrate your Learning for Outcome 2
Keywords
Evaluate (A) I can Justify the use of aluminium
or iron for commercial applications
Analyse (B) I can compare the properties of iron
and aluminium.
Apply (C) I can carry out and complete a research
task.

Seat covers
Windows Transparent Glass, plastic
List the major materials used in a car and
explain why they are used. Describe the
advantages and disadvantages of building cars
from steel or from aluminium.
18
Research Task 2b Recycling of metals and cars
Every year in Europe, end of life vehicles
generate between 8 and 9 million tonnes of
waste. A European Directive requires car
manufacturers to improve their designs to make
cars easier to recycle.
  • Look at your list of materials from Task 2a.
  • Find out how recyclable they are. You should
    include
  • Ease of separation.
  • Ease of purification.
  • Cost in .
  • Cost in energy.
  • Environmental impact.

Review
  • Swap books with the person next to you and look
over their work. Write a WWW and EBI statement.
  • Stand up if you have developed some skills this
    lesson? What are they?
  • Tell the person next to you three things you have
    learnt this lesson.
  • Did you successfully complete tasks at your
    target grade?
  • If not, what do you need to do next in order to
meet your target grade? Record this in your diary
to be done as part of your extended learning at
    home.
  • Is there any part of the lesson you think you
need to go over again next lesson?
  • How will you remember what you have learned today
    for your exam?
