Title: Iris Recognition

1
Iris Recognition
Iris Recognition is sometimes confused with
Retinal Scanning which is the biometric often
shown in the movies. These are two completely
different biometrics. Retinal Scanning requires
a bright light to be shined onto the retina, the
back of the eye, from a very close range and is
very intrusive. Iris Recognition simply takes a
picture of the Iris, the colored part of the eye
from a comfortable distance of 3 to 10 inches.

Image Capture
The iris image is captured using a camera similar
to that in a home video camcorder. The iris is
illuminated with low level IR illumination
similar to that used in a wireless television
remote control.

Safety of Iris Biometrics
  • The LG3000 has the following UL approved eye
    safety certifications IEC 60825-1, ANSI/IESNA
    RP-27.1-96.
  • The LEDs used are similar to those used in TV
remote controls, toys and other consumer
products. The energy emitted by the LEDs is not
at all harmful to the human eye even under all
conceivable conditions of normal use and even
misuse. The energy entering the eye is far less
than that received when a person stands outside
in sunlight or looks at an incandescent lamp. -
Quote from Dr. Slineys eye safety report.
  • The LG3000 camera, the same type used in a
camcorder, only takes a picture of the iris
(front of the eye) and is completely non-invasive.
