Title: Fetal%20Heart%20Circulation

1
Fetal Heart Circulation
  • Before birth, blood from the fetal heart that is
destined for the lungs is shunted away from the
lungs through a short vessel called the ductus
arteriosus and returned to the aorta.
  • When this shunt is open, it is said to be a
patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). The PDA usually
closes at or shortly after birth, allowing blood
to course freely to the lungs.
  • Foramen ovale- in the fetal heart, a shunt from
the right atrium to left atrium

2
Heart Murmur
  • Irregular heartbeat caused by increased in blood
    flow to the heart
  • an abnormal sound of the heart
  • sometimes a sign of abnormal function of the
    heart valves.

3
Arrythmia
  • irregular heartbeat
  • electrical impulses to the heart that coordinate
heartbeats are not working properly, making the
heart beat too fast/slow or inconsistently

Pacemaker
  • A pacemaker is a small device, about the size of
a pocket watch, that's placed under the skin near
your heart to help control your heartbeat.
  • Arrhythmias
  • the heart's rhythm is abnormal

Heart Disease- The Silent Killer
6
What is Heart Disease?
  • A general term that covers a number of diseases
which affect the heart, including coronary artery
    disease, heart-failure and angina.
  • Heart Disease is the number one killer in the
    United States.

7
Atherosclerosis and Arteriosclerosis
  • Arterioslcerosis
  • Hardening of the arteries
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Atherosclerosis is a specific type of
arteriosclerosis, but the terms are sometimes
    used interchangeably. Atherosclerosis isthe
buildup of fats and cholesterol in and on your
artery walls (plaques), which can restrict blood
    flow.

8
Coronary Artery Disease
  • Occurs when the coronary arteries that supply
    the heart muscle become blocked.
  • Partially blocked it causes angina.
  • Fully blocked it causes a myocardial infarction
    or a heart attack!

9
Myocardial Infarction or Heart Attack
  • Symptoms uncomfortable pressure, fullness,
squeezing pain, pain spreading to the shoulders,
    neck and arms.
  • Chest discomfort and light headedness
  • Anxiety/nervousness
  • Paleness or pallor
  • Increased irregular heart rate

10
Myocardial Infarction contd.
  • Feeling of impending doom
  • If you or someone you know is having these
    symptoms call 911!

Angioplasty and Stenting
  • Angioplasty
  • procedure for expanding arteries that have become
    blocked
  • Stenting
  • small mesh tube that's used to treat narrow or
    weak arteries
