  • Very useful for both athlete and coach in 1)
    technical and tacticall aspects but also
  • 2) physical requirements.

  • This form of data collection is best suited to
    games where movements are more free range and
    unpredictable.
  • Activities where charting movements of players is
    critical to development.

Intensity charts.
  • Symbols are assigned to the intensities observed
    while an athlete participates in a game or
    activity.
  • I.E. an athlete working at OR
  • High (H) Walk (W)
  • Medium (M) Jog (J)
  • Low (L) Run (R)
  • Sprint (S)

Work rest ratios
  • Used to compare the amount of time working with
    the amount of time resting.
  • Calculate the total time working and resting and
    reducing this to the lowest number of times one
    figure contains the other.
  • E.G. 6min work 18min rest gives a work to
    rest of 13.
  • This ration is common in team games.

  • One of the most important aspects to consider is
    how to define the terms WORK and REST
  • Read page 180 (left hand side).

Combined intensity and work rest ratios
  • This is a very important type of data collection.
    It allows some conclusions to made about the
    energy systems that are activated because the
    following data is collected
  • What intensity they are working at
  • For how long
  • Rest intervals.

  • 1 Data can be gathered from movement patterns,
    intensity charts, skill frequency, heart rate,
    etc. In most cases it will indicate the frequency
    of usage of fitness components. If combined with
    information regarding duration of the activity
    being observed, estimations of energy system
    usage can be made.
  • 2 Intensity and duration are critical data. Any
    strategy that reveals both of these will be
    effective. Heart rate combined with duration of
    work and rest intervals is the most effective
    strategy that is readily available to most
    athletes and coaches.

  • 1. Activity analysis requires skills such as
    ability to observe, collect data, deduce,
    analyse, relate, predict and forecast.
  • 2 Analysis can reveal the muscle groups, fitness
    components and energy systems used in a
    particular activity.
  • 3 Movement patterns and skill frequency charts
    need additional information about intensity and
    duration before conclusions about energy systems
    and fitness components can be made.
  • 4 When recording movement patterns, be sure that
    the athlete remains in view at all times and that
    the camera is sufficiently distant from the

    court/field/playing area can be seen. Also,
    record as much of the game as possible.
  • 5 A work-rest ratio chart reveals the longest and
