Mission and Objectives
Deliver NPOESS data products and assist NOAA and
other civilian operational users to realize the
potential of NPOESS observations
  • Disseminate NPOESS Data Records to real-time
    civilian users
  • Generate and disseminate tailored NPOESS Data
    Records
  • Generate and disseminate NOAA-unique products
(enhanced data products constructed from NPOESS
    Data Records)
  • Deliver NOAA-unique products, product processing
elements, and associated metadata to CLASS for
    long-term archiving
  • Provide services to customers, including NDE
    product training, product enhancement, and
    implementation support across NOAA
  • Provide software for NPOESS Data Record format
    translation and other data manipulations

Product Tailoring Tool Selection
  • Conducted Workshop Nov 27-28, 2007
  • Refined requirements
  • Identified, evaluated, down-selected candidate
    tools
  • Published Report February 2008
  • Evaluating of remaining candidates
  • Final selection September 2008
  • Initiated project to re-format key XDRs for NWP
    (convert products to BUFR GRIB)
  • SW developed in NESDIS/STAR, integrated into NDE
  • Priorities identified with NCEP/EMC and JCSDA

System Integration Update
  • Product Integration Teams still planned
  • Formal establishment delayed by fiscal
    realities
  • Environmental Modeling and NWP coordination
  • Meeting bi-monthly w/ JCSDA Director, NOAA
    Deputies
  • Synch product development delivery with NCEP
    testing
  • Provide mutual support for budget requests
  • COPC Action Item Proposed distributed leads for
    assimilation of NPP data
  • NOAA Sounder data
  • AFWA Snow and land surface
  • USN - SST
  • COPC Participation
  • JAG/ODAA and Plenary sessions

13
System Integration Update
  • NDE Team helped formulate NESDIS response to US
Navy inquiry concerning NPP data access
  • July 2008 Meeting planned
  • Continue to work with AWIPS Evolution Project
  • Coordinate schedules, architectures, smart
    push-pull for
  • Work with Schrabe and Heil to identify product
    requirements from WFOs and RFCs
  • Collaboration with Hydrometeor Testbed
  • HMT gets enhanced data to support
    forecasts/warning
  • NDE gets data/expertise to validate precipitation
    products
  • Outreach and Training Program
  • Identify new applications and new users
  • Develop/support training modules for products
  • Leverage existing resources
  • COMET, NWS Training Division, VISIT, SHYMET

14
NDE -COPC Considerations
  • Investigate expansion of the Shared Processing
    Link
  • Facilitate the distribution of NDE NUPs and XDRs
    to Navy and AFWA Centrals
  • Encourage co-development by NDE and the DoD
    Centrals
  • For data product development
  • We have NUPs Will there be science-enhanced
products developed by the DoD partners? Will
    these be shared?
  • For tools
  • For Training
  • Explore NPOESS data backup options between NDE
    and DoD central
  • Establish com line between a DOD IDPS and
    NDE/NCEP computer center

15
Summary
  • The NDE Project is committed to deliver products
to NCEP as soon as they are made available
  • In principle, NDE could serve other OPCs
  • Phase 1 NPP Products will support NWP continuity
  • Product Integration Team for Data Assimilation
    will be first established (Streamline
preparations for NCEP and JCSDA partners to apply
and test procedures they are developing to
    assimilate NPP and NPOESS observations)
  • For the benefit of all partners, we should
    consider
  • Expansion of the Shared Processing Link
  • Co-development opportunities (NDE and DoD
    Centrals)
  • Backup options between the Centrals
