Auguste Comte1798 - 1857
  • Founder of sociology as a distinct area of study.
  • French Philosopher who was one of the first to
    apply physical science to the study of social
    life.
  • Focused on social order and social change He
    wanted to reform society.

Herbert Spencer1820 - 1903
  • Strongly influenced by Charles Darwin, an
    evolutionist.
  • Spencer developed an all-embracing conception of
    evolution as the progressive development of the
    physical world, biological organisms, the human
    mind, and human culture and societies.
  • Coined the term Survival of the Fittest.
  • Spencers views of society became known as
    Social Darwinism.

  • His views on conflict in societies social
    structure led to the development of conflict
    theory.
  • Believed that the structure of a society is
    influenced by how its economy is organized.
  • Societies economic system strongly influences its
    social structure.
  • Society is organized into two classes

    between classes and status groups each seeking to
