• The British sea captain James Cook claimed New
  Zealand in 1769 and part of Australia in 1770 for
  Great Britain.
• The Maori greeted Cook when he got to New
  Zealand.
• When Cook reached Australia the Aborigines were
  already there.

• It was slower to grow because Britain didnt
  claim ownership like they did in Australia.
• In 1840 the Maori signed a treaty that said they
  would go under the British rule for exchange for
  there land rights.
