The Opium Wars
  • Opium Wars Great Britain vs. China
  • Why? China did not want to trade with Great
    Britain, because the Chinese did not want British
    products.
  • The British were desperate for Chinese tea.
  • The Chinese would only accept payment in Gold.
    This upset Britain s bullion reserves and
    mercantilist economy.
  • The British solution was to smuggle highly
    addictive, illegal opium in to China from British
    India, getting millions of Chinese addicted to
    opium.
  • Now Britain had a trade good the Chinese wanted.
  • Treaty of Nanking, 1842, ends Opium Wars
  • Great Britain gains trade with China and Hong
    Kong
  • Taiping Rebellion- Rebels led by Hong Xiuquan,
    who claimed to be the brother of Jesus Christ.
  • They were mostly peasants angry about the Nanking
    Treaty, foreign troops in China, and the
    corruption of the Manchu government.
  • The rebels wanted equality for women and the
    adoption of Christianity.
  • 14 years long
  • 20 million people died
  • The rebels were defeated.

  • Goal- remove all foreigners from China and end
    the Qing Dynasty
  • BOXERS Wanted to be isolated- Isolationism
  • European nations and the US helped the Chinese
    government defeat the Boxers

OPEN DOOR POLICY
  • America is interested in Chinese trade, not
    Chinese territory
  • The United States fears European powers carving
    up and annexing parts of China.
  • The U.S. wants
  • Equal trade rights for all countries.
  • Preserve Chinese independence and territory
  • This Open Door policy gained the U.S. Chinese
    good will for many years.

  • Sun Yat-sen- founder of the Chinese Nationalist
    Party
  • 1911 took control of China
  • Led China through WWI
  • During World Wars, other political groups began
    to emerge

  • Civil War- 1930
  • Chiang led his party, the Nationalists, against
    the Communist party
  • 1934- The Long March
  • Communist retreat
  • 100,000 people marched over 6,000 miles

  • World War II- China is invaded by the Japanese
  • Chiang needs the help of the Communist Red Army
  • Join together to fight Japanese during WWII
  • 1945-1949 (Following WWII) Communist and
    Nationalist parties fight again

  • Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalists are
    defeated. They escape to the island of Formosa,
    which is today the nation of Taiwan.
  • 1949- Communists take control of China and create
    the Peoples Republic of China
  • Mao Zedong- new ruler
  • Communism- government holds all of the power and
    the production of the people

  • Great Leap Forward- final push to economic
    development
  • Huge farms of over 25,000 people

  • Red Guards- citizens who worked to find those
    who spoke out against the Communist Party

  • 1979- Mao dies and Cultural Revolution ends

  • Brutal attack by the government killed many
    demonstrators

    billion people!
  • China is the worlds largest exporter.
  • China has the worlds largest military.
  • Worlds largest GDP.
  • The economy is a hybrid market economy that is
    regulated by the government.
  • China is officially an atheist country.
  • Personal freedoms, like freedom of speech,
    freedom of religion, freedom of the press are
    denied.
