Adding Prepositional Phrases

• Writers use prepositional phrases to add details
  and information to their sentences. PPs function
  as adjectives or adverbs.
• Ex Some fish have beaklike mouths of fused
  teeth. (Acts as adj. to describe mouth).
• Ex Parrot fish live on coral reefs. (Acts as
  adverb to modify the verb live.)

Examples of Sentences that Begin with a Prep
Phrase

• Below the murky water lives a whole school of
  unusual fish.
• Across the horizon, I could see the glowing sun
  falling from the sky.
• Over the tall skyscrapers, the plane seemed to
  fly effortlessly.

Prep Phrase Practice

• Add a prepositional phrase to each sentence
• One of my favorite tanks contains freshwater
  fish.
• City aquariums have huge tanks of water.

Adding Adverbs

• Begin at least one sentence in your draft with an
  adverb.
• Instead of saying, I ran to the store quickly.
  Try moving the adverb to the beginning of the
  sentence Quickly, I ran to the store and
  bought some milk.

Using Similes

• Similes compare two things using the words like
  or as
• The children were as busy as bees.
• The streets of New York were like a beehive,
  filled with activity.

• No two sentences should start with the same word!
• I ran to the store to buy some milk. I bought
  the milk. I got in my car. I went home. I
  forgot my wallet in the store.
• I ran to the store to buy some milk and quickly
  bought a gallon. As I got in my car to go home,
  I realized I had forgotten my wallet in the store.
