Title: The Use of the Research Proposal

1
The Use of the Research Proposal
2
The Research Proposal
  • Contrary to dissertation mythology, the choice
of topic is not an inspirational point in time,
but rather an extended process. D. Sternberg,
How to Complete and Survive a Doctoral
    Dissertation, p. 73

3
The Research Proposal
  • The proposal is a systematic, extended
exploration of ones topic, from statement of the
problem all the way through anticipated analytic
    procedures.
  • D. Sternberg, How to Complete and Survive a
    Doctoral Dissertation, p. 73

4
The Research Proposal
  • The Application Process
  • Students are advised to consult with the
relevant Head of Department to discuss their
proposed area of research prior to making an
    application through the Postgraduate Applications
Centre. In the case of the research programmes
offered through the Faculties of Arts, Commerce,
Law and Medicine, a typed research proposal
(1,500 words approx) must be included with the
    Postgraduate Studies Application form.

5
The Research Proposal
  • the proposal down the road will likely be
reworked further and expanded, and possibly
    presented before a committee (e.g. DGSC/SGSC)
  • needs to address a research area for which there
would be a supervisor at UCC

6
The Research Proposal
  • It should outline
  • the major research questions
  • the objectives of the research project
  • how the project makes an original contribution to
    knowledge in the field

7
The Research Proposal
  • It could also make a case as to why the applicant
    wants to study at UCC
  • It could also explain how s/he might obtain the
    necessary materials (archives, interviews,
on-line resources) i.e. what resources does UCC
have to offer in this particular area?

8
The Research Proposal
  • The proposal should
  • not be merely descriptive it needs to show that
the applicant is planning to engage with the
    field
  • explain what methodological framework will be
    employed
  • include a (select) bibliography

9
The Research ProposalThe IRCHSS Model

aims and objectives and central research
    questions.

schedule for the completion of tasks/phases of
the project and efficient management and
    performance of research
  • 1.iv Description of the relationship of the
project to existing research. Suggest how the
project will make a new contribution to
    knowledge.
  • 1.v Description of any specialist knowledge/data
required to undertake the project (e.g. language
competence, technical skills, use of specialist
software, etc.). Describe plans for acquiring
this knowledge/data if it is not already in
place. Describe how data required for this
    project will be accessed.
  • 1.vi Reason for choosing the institution and
supervisor for the project. Please provide
details if the project will be part of the work
