1
Literary EssayThe TempestWriting the
Conclusion
  • English 12

2
Purpose of a Conclusion
  • 1. To sum up your arguments.
  • 2. To clearly state that your thesis has been
    proven.
  • 3. To leave a lasting impression on your reader.

3
Elements of Conclusion
  • Thesis Statement re-stated in different terms
(Dont copy and paste it looks really
    amateurish)
  • Brief summary of your main points
  • One last, universal comment that lends finality
    to your paper.

4
Conclusion Example
  • Prosperos magic allowed him survive, and even
thrive, against all odds. Magic provided him with
an opportunity to find a husband for his beloved
daughter, and gave him a chance to bring his
disloyal brother to justice. It also helped him
to find his way back to his life in Milan. The
mystical elements of the play give it an ethereal
quality that delights the audience. It is magic
that makes Shakespeares The Tempest a compelling
tale of beauty, survival and triumph.

5
What has gone wrong here?
  • So you can see that the play is about a magician
who has slaves and he controls them and they beg
for their freedom but he cant let them go
because he needs to harness their magic for his
own selfish needs but Shakespeare clearly
disagrees and has him come to his senses and free
them and that is why slavery is the central theme
    of the Shakespeares The Tempest.

6
What has gone wrong with this conclusion?
  • It was sad and tragic. They were shipwrecked.
And she was nearly raped. By the half-man
half-fish Caliban. How she didnt know any other
men. The Tempest explores all of that tragedy
that happened. . The play makes you think about
people who were abandoned. And those who nearly
    died.

7
What has gone wrong with this conclusion?
  • Its so sad that I bawled for about a week when I
read the play. Not that the play is sad, except
that I think Miranda has been lonely not knowing
any men. I think I was really crying because she
had such a hard life, and it makes me feel like
crap because I have it easy and I whine all the
time about nothing. The Tempest, by William
Shakespeare, made me re-evaluate my whole life.

8
What has gone wrong with this conclusion?
  • Websters Dictionary defines survival as a
natural process resulting in the evolution of
organisms best adapted to the environment. In
this essay I have proven, beyond a reasonable
doubt, that Prospero, the main character in
Shakespeares The Tempest, is a textbook
survivor, because I think he adapted to his
environment and, using magic, evolved into the
ruler of his very own island.

9
Now
  • It is time to write your conclusion. Dont fret
too much if youre having trouble finding a
lasting, final line. During your peer-editing
session on Monday, you can ask your editor to
help you write that all-important final
    statement.
  • Be clear and concise this should be your
    shortest paragraph.
  • Sum-up your arguments and re-state your thesis.
    Youll be fine.
