Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club
Overview

Rotary waS
  • Founded by Chicago attorney Paul Harris and three
    friends in 1905.
  • Friends were a coal dealer, a mining engineer,
    and a tailor they were joined the next day by
    printer and a real estate agent.
  • Harris envisioned a club where business men and
    professionals could become better acquainted.
  • Meeting sites were rotated among the membership,
    hence the name Rotary Club.
  • In 1907, the coal dealer suggested the clubs
    purpose should become service to the community.
  • The first service project was a public comfort
    station outside City Hall in Chicago.

Rotary grew
  • 1910 1913 Clubs formed in Canada, Great
    Britain, and Ireland.
  • 1913 First Tennessee club, in Nashville.
  • 1915-1916 First non-English-speaking club formed
    in Cuba.
  • 1946 Oak Ridge Rotary Club (noon club) formed.
  • 1980 Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club formed
    Tennessees first Breakfast Club.
  • Today More than 30,000 clubs in more than 160
    countries.

Rotary is
  • A membership-based organization
  • None of us would be here without the good
    intentions of a member and an invitation from the
    club.
  • A world-wide organization of more than 1.2M
    business and professional leaders who
  • Encourage high ethical standards in all
    vocations.
  • Build goodwill, understanding, and peace in their
    communities and in the world.
  • Provide humanitarian service, grants, and
    scholarships.
  • Functions within a budget based on dues
    (operations) and donations to The Rotary
    Foundation (programs).

Organization
  • Rotary clubs are members of Rotary International.
  • Individuals are members of local clubs.
  • Clubs are grouped into Districts ours is 6780.
  • Clubs are autonomous within the Rotary
    International framework.
  • Agree to basic ideals and specific requirements.
  • Identify own projects, set own dues, elect own
    officers.
  • May partner with a local Foundation to fund
    charitable community activities.

The Rotary Foundation
  • A tax exempt organization created in 1917 to
    support Rotary programs. The initial
    contribution was 26.50.
  • Financed solely by voluntary contributions from
    Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share
    a vision of a better world.
  • In RY2013/14 contributions were 117M.
  • Administration 2 Programs 90.
  • Supports RIs efforts to achieve world
    understanding and peace through humanitarian,
    educational, and cultural exchange programs.

OrBRC Foundation
  • A separate organization that partners with ORBRC
    to provide financial support for charitable,
    educational, scientific, and literary activities.
  • Administers a grant program that promotes relief
    for the poor, the distressed, and
    underprivileged.
  • Focus is on the Oak Ridge community and
    neighboring East Tennessee areas.
  • Is a 501(c)3 organization, exempt from federal
    income tax.

Major Projects
  • Literacy Luncheon provides grants to improve
    literacy in the area a joint project with
    Altrusa Oak Ridge.
  • Clean Water Haiti an RIF global grant led by
    ORBRC in conjunction with three area clubs and
    one Haiti club.
  • Explore Oak Ridge an app that will inform and
    assist citizens and visitors about Oak Ridge.
  • Celebrate Rotary an annual addition to the
    local newspaper celebrating Rotary and Rotarians
    in the area.

ORBRC Members
  • Community and business leaders who embrace Rotary
    Internationals ideal of Service above Self.
  • The are active members who
  • participate in weekly meetings.
  • volunteer for club activities.
  • assist with club projects.
  • support the RI Foundation and the ORBRC
    Foundation.

An Invitation to Join
  • Clubs issue the invitation to become a Rotarian.
  • Members propose a potential member to the Board
    through the Membership Committee.
  • The Board acts on the proposal invites the
    potential member to learn more about
    responsibilities, privileges, and expectations of
    members.
  • Club members have an opportunity to express
    concerns.
  • The Board recommends and the membership votes
    acceptance of the potential member into the club.

General Qualifications
  • Adults of good character and good business or
    professional reputation.
  • Are or were (if retired) engaged in a worthy and
    reputable business or profession.
  • Hold or have held a responsible position within
    his or her business or profession.
  • Reside or work in Oak Ridge or the neighboring
    area.

Participation
  • Meetings and Gatherings
  • Attend 50 or more includes club weekly and club
    business meetings, Rotary meetings, and make
    ups at other clubs or eClubs.
  • Service Projects
  • Engage in one or more projects.
  • Fellowship
  • Participate in one of more club events.

Financial Obligations
  • Financial responsibility for new members
  • One-time initiation fee of 100.
  • Pro-rated dues and meal fees.
  • Dues and meal fees are
  • 600 if paid annually or 310 if paid
    semi-annually.
  • Can be paid by check, credit card, or cash.
  • Invoiced in May/June and November/December.
  • Support for Foundations is encouraged
  • Rotary Foundation 100 or more per Rotary Year.
  • ORBRC Foundation open.
