Title: When the Protestant Reformation comes to England, it will travel with the English to their colonies in the New World
1Reform means to make changes to re form ation.
- When the Protestant Reformation comes to England,
it will travel with the English to their colonies
in the New World - and
- down through time to
- modern day America to influence you and your
life.
2King Arthur but not the Arthur of the Camelot
stories.

4Dispense- to give out. Pharmacists dispense

- To summarize- Arthur, is the heir to Englands
throne. He is engaged to marry the youngest
princess of the newly united Spain. - Catherine moves to England at 15 years old. They
are married a few years later but do not
consummate the marriage (have sex). - Arthur dies. His younger brother Henry will now
be the King of England. - Several years later, when Henry is of age, he
wants a papal dispensation to marry his brothers
widow one of his claims is that there is
biblical precedent in the Law of Moses (the Old
Testament).
5King Henry VIII
6Queen Catherine of England
7Math term- see the word NULL as in a null (empty)
set.
- Annul- to cancel or void.
- It means to think/act as if the thing never
happened in the first place. In the case of a
marriage, you are now single once again and free
to marry someone else. - This is just the Church. You may still need a
civil (government) divorce.
8Anne Boleyn Who refused to be his mistress- she
would only accept Henry if he married her.
9The Oath of Supremacy
Supreme means highest ranking suprem acy
- The King of England is the Supreme Head of the
Church of England. You had to pledge allegiance
to him in a religious sense. - This made England a THEOCRATIC MONARCHY. Recall
Islam and The Papal States. - Since Jesus appointed Peter His Successors to
lead the Church- this is heresy (wrong thinking).
The Pope is the true leader of the Church. Any
other person claiming to be the leader, is wrong.

the king generation.
13Queen Catherine her daughter

natural death.
14Anne her daughter Queen
Elizabeth I Boleyn
Remember- she was beheaded for alleged treason.
15Summary
- Henry VIII was a Defender of the Faith who spoke
out against the Protestant Reformation UNTIL he
wanted an annulment of his legitimate marriage to
Catherine of Aragon. - So, Henry broke with the Catholic Church and
declared himself to be the Supreme Head of the
Church of England. Then, he granted himself his
divorce. - One took an oath to support his supremacy OR
accepted martyrdom like saints Bishop John Fisher
and Thomas More.
16The Aftermath- what happened next?
- The Catholic Queen, Mary, and
- the Protestant (Church of England) Queen,
Elizabeth, - are going to fight a civil war for years over the
throne. Each has her supporters. When Elizabeth
is in power, the ruling class is anti-Catholic.
They kill priests, nuns monks, wealthy
Catholics and confiscate their property. - Certainly some of the Catholics fought to defend
their faith. But, most people involved in this,
especially on the Protestant side, fought for
political or economic gain.
So, who wins this civil war over religion?
17 the Protestant Elizabeth wins.
The current queen of England is Elizabeth II.
- This explains why the colonists that come to
settle in the New World Colonies (USA) are
anti-Catholic. - Economics is still partially driving this
anti-Catholic sentiment. You dont own land in
the New World without a charter or deed from the
Protestant King.
18It explains something else
Do you pray in a public school classroom?
- The colonists who abandon England are unhappy
with the theocratic monarchy. - When they have a chance to design their own
government, they deliberately write its
constitution to keep Church and State separate.
