1
The Life and Times of
  • William Shakespeare

2
Who was William Shakespeare?
  • He was born in April 1564 in the small town of
    Stratford-Upon-Avon in England.
  • His father John Shakespeare was a glove maker and
    public official.
  • His mother Mary Alden was the daughter of a
    gentleman.
  • He was the oldest surviving sibling of eight
    children.
  • He most likely attended the local grammar school
    and studied Latin.
  • During Shakespeares childhood groups of touring
actors would stop in his hometown, and scholars
believe that Shakespeare watched these actors
    perform.
  • Shakespeare got married in 1582 at the age of 18
    to Anne Hatheway.

Shakespeares Life continued
  • By 1585 Shakespeare was a father of three (two
    daughters and a son)
  • At some point during the next eight years
Shakespeare left his family in Stratford and
moved to London to begin his career in theatre
  • By 1592 he had gained success as an actor and
playwright, but the theatre had closed due to a
    plague outbreak in London
  • By 1594 the plague became less of a threat, and
    the theatre reopened
  • Once the theatre reopened Shakespeare joined a
famous acting group Lord Chamberlains Men
  • Romeo and Juliet was one of the first plays he
    wrote for this company

Shakespeares Life Continued
  • In 1598 Shakespeare became a part owner of a new
theatre. The Globe Theatre was destroyed by a
    fire in 1613.
  • After the fire Shakespeare returned home to
Stratford, and retired a wealthy man. He had
made a substantial amount of money from the sales
of his plays, and his share in the acting company
    that performed at the Globe.
  • Shakespeare died in 1616.
  • His first collection of plays was published seven
    years later.
