Circuits
  • An Electric Circuit is an uninterrupted
conducting path for an electric current.
  • In order for electrons to flow and do work, there
must be a complete pathway through which they can
    move.

3
Closed Circuit
  • When there is a flow of electrons the circuit is
    said to be closed

4
Open Circuit
  • When the flow is interrupted and the electrons
cannot move through the circuit, the circuit is
    said to be open.

5
Circuits
  • A practical way to open and close a circuit is a
    switch
  • An electrical circuit can be regarded as a system.

6
Circuits
  • Within this system there may be four subsystems
  • Source ? The part that changes some other
form of energy into electrical energy
  • Conductor ? A material that allows electric
current to pass through it easily
  • Control ?The part by which the circuit is open
    or closed (usually a switch)
  • Load ?The part that changes electrical
energy into some other form of energy

7
Series Circuit
  • In a series circuit the electrons flow through
each device along a single connecting path.
  • The removal of one bulb interrupts the path of
    electricity through the circuit.

8
Parallel Circuit
  • In a parallel circuit the electrons can flow
through two or move alternative paths.
  • If one bulb is removed, the circuit still remains
    closed.

9
Circuit Diagrams
  • Standard symbols are used to represent each part
    of a circuit.
