Elder Leadership Roles
  • What Elder Leadership Means to You

11
Elder Leadership Roles You
  • Partners in Prayer
  • Other elders
  • Those who seek additional prayer for themselves
  • Is anyone among you ill? He should summon the
elders of the church, and they should pray for
him and anoint him with oil in the name of the
    Lord. (James 514)

12
Elder Leadership Roles (cont)
  • Unity and Harmony
  • Decision Process
  • Prayer
  • Study of the Word
  • Fasting
  • Unanimous decisions with the mind of Christ
    guiding us
  • For who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to
advise him? But we have the mind of Christ. (I
    Cor. 216).
  • Everyone will seek Holy Spirit guidance to have
    the mind of Christ

13
Elder Leadership Roles (cont)
  • Unanimity in decisions
  • (1 Cor. 110)
  • (Eph. 43)
  • (Phil. 127)
  • complete my joy and be of the same mind, by
having the same love, being united in spirit,
and having one purpose (Phil 22)
  • Unity and harmony in the church begins with unity
    and harmony among its leaders

14
Elder Leadership Roles (cont)
  • Defenders of the faith
  • False teachers and those in leadership positions
whose conduct brings disgrace and shame up on the
Name of Christ must not be allowed to infiltrate
    God's church
  • (I Tim. 41-6 Titus 19-11 39-10 I Cor.
    512-13).

15
Elder Leadership Roles (cont)
  • 1 Tim 41-6 1 Now the Spirit explicitly says
that in the later times some will desert the
faith and occupy themselves with deceiving
spirits and demonic teachings, 2. influenced by
the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are
seared. 3. They will prohibit marriage and
require abstinence from foods that God created to
be received with thanksgiving by those who
believe and know the truth. 4. For every creation
of God is good and no food5 is to be rejected if
it is received with thanksgiving. 5. For it is
sanctified by Gods word and by prayer. 6. By
pointing out such things to the brothers and
sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ
Jesus, having nourished yourself on the words of
the faith and of the good teaching that you have
    followed.
  • Titus 1 9-11 He must hold firmly to the faithful
message as it has been taught, so that he will be
able to give exhortation in such healthy teaching
and correct those who speak against it. 10. For
there are many rebellious people, idle talkers,
and deceivers, especially those with Jewish
connections, 11. who must be silenced because
they mislead whole families by teaching for
dishonest gain what ought not to be taught.
  • Titus 3 9-10 But avoid foolish controversies,
genealogies, quarrels, and fights about the law,
because they are useless and empty. 10. Reject a
divisive person after one or two warnings.
  • 1 Cor 5 12-13 For what do I have to do with
judging those outside? Are you not to judge those
inside? 13. But God will judge those outside.
Remove the evil person from among you.

16
Elder Leadership Roles (cont)
  • Humility
  • Elders are not called on to lead by force or
dictatorial power, but by precept and example
  • Remember your leaders, who spoke Gods message to
you reflect on the outcome of their lives and
    imitate their faith. (Heb. 137)
  • Not board executives (Called not Elected).
  • Spiritual leaders (Shepherds)

17
Elder Leadership (cont)
  • Source of Counsel for members
  • Personal concerns and conflict
  • (I Cor. 61-8).

18
Elder Leadership Roles (cont)
  • Caring and Loving Shepherds
  • Love must rule in all matters of leadership.
  • So as your fellow elder and a witness of
Christs sufferings and as one who shares in the
glory that will be revealed, I urge the elders
among you Give a shepherds care to Gods
flock among you, exercising oversight not merely
as a duty but willingly under Gods direction,
not for shameful profit but eagerly. And do not
lord it over those entrusted to you, but be
examples to the flock. (I pet. 51-3)

Worship
  • Pastor Jackie

25
What is Worship?
  • Romans 121-2 "Therefore, in view of God's mercy,
offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and
pleasing to God, for this is your spiritual act
of worship.  Do not conform any longer to the
pattern of this world, but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to
test and approve what God's will is--his good,
    pleasing and perfect will."

26
Corporate Worship
  • John 423 "Yet a time is coming and has now come,
when the true worshipers will worship the Father
    in spirit and in truth."

Questions / Comments
?
36
Rebuilding the Walls
  • Larry Peete

37
  • The righteous cry out and the Lord hears, and
delivers them out of their troubles. The Lord is
near to those who have a broken heart, and save
such as have a contrite spirit. Many are the
afflictions of the righteous. But the Lord
delivers him out of them all.
  • Psalm 34 17-19

38
  • State of the Church
  • Nehemiah Nehemiah saw the problems, was
distressed, the walls and gates were destroyed
all around Israel. Instead of complaining or
lading in self-pity and grief, he took action.
  •

39
Nehemiahs 1st Course of Action
  • 1. Nehemiah prayed and fasted before God.
  • Nehemiah 14-5 so it was when I hear these
words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned for
many days I was fasting and praying before the
    God of heaven.
  • Neh. 18-9 Remember, I pray, the words You
commanded Your servant Moses, saying, If you are
unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations
but if you return to Me, and keep my commandments
and do them, though some of you were cast out to
the farthest part of the heavens, yet I will
gather them from there, and bring them to the
place which I have chosen as a dwelling for My
    name.

40
Nehemiahs 2nd Course of Action
  • 2. Nehemiah took charge, he saw what was needed
    and put together a plan.
  • Neh. 212,13 Then I rose in the night, I and a
few men with me I told no one what my God had
put in my heart to do in Jerusalem nor were
there any animals with me, except the one which I
rode. And I went out by night through the Valley
Gate to the Serpent Well and the Refuse gat, and
viewed the walls of Jerusalem which were broken
down and its gates which were burn with fire.

41
Nehemiahs 3rd Course of Action
  • 3. He called the high priest and priests, the
leaders and all the people together and shared
his plans so everyone was behind him.
  • Neh. 31 The first to rise, and build the first
gate were the high priest and his brethren
priests building the Sheep Gate. (As leaders we
must not only lead by words but by action).

42
  • If My people who are called by My name will
humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and
turn from their wicked ways,  then I will hear
from heaven, and will forgive their sins and heal
    their land.
  • 2 Chr 714

43
  • But the salvation of the righteous is from
the Lord He is their strength in time of
trouble. And the Lord shall help them and deliver
them He shall deliver them from the wicked, And
save them, because they trust in Him.
  • Psalm 3739-40

44
Isaiah 4110
  • Dont be afraid, for I am with you!
  • Dont be frightened, for I am your God!
  • I strengthen you
  • yes, I help you
  • yes, I uphold you with my saving right hand!
