Title: 7.02 reflection in plane mirrors (1)

1
7. Rays and waves
  • 7.02 reflection in plane mirrors (1)

2
7.02 light rays and waves

7.02 Reflection in plane mirrors
  • When a ray of light is incident on a material
like mirror, it undergoes reflection. The
incoming ray is incident ray, the outgoing ray is
the reflected ray and the line at right- angles
to the mirrors surface is called a normal. The
angle between the incident ray and the normal is
called the angle of incidence. The angle between
the reflected ray and the normal is called the
    angle of reflection.

7.02 Reflection in plane mirrors
  • Laws of reflection
  • The angle of incidence is equal to angle of
    reflection.
  • The incident ray, the reflected ray and the
normal all lie in the same plane.

7.02 Reflection in plane mirrors
  • Reflection in plane mirror

6
7.02 Reflection in plane mirrors
  • Rules for image size and position
  • The size of the image is same as that of the
    object.
  • The image is as far behind the mirror as the
    object is in front.
  • A line joining equivalent points on the object
and the image passes through the mirror at right
    angles.
  • Note The image is laterally inverted and virtual

7.02 Reflection in plane mirrors
  • Real and virtual images
  • For a real image light rays actually converge
at a point to form the image.
  • for a virtual image, the rays appear to
converge. E.g. image in a plane mirror.
