BEFORE 1861 (BEFORE THE WAR)
  • NULLIFICATION CRISIS
  • It started when southern states challenged the
    federal governments authority to make laws.
    Because states had created the union, they had
    the right to declare a federal law NULL, or not
    valid.

IN 1861?
  1. Because of new states entering the union that did
    not have slaves, the slaveholding states would
    soon be in the minority.
  2. Growing support of abolition of slavery by
    northerners.

  • America felt that its frontier was settled, and
    this caused a rise of IMPERIALISM, the move to
    gain territory outside the borders.

  • Then, in 1898, our battleship Maine exploded in

    Cuba, and the war was over in one year.
