not have slaves, the slaveholding states would
soon be in the minority. - Growing support of abolition of slavery by

- America felt that its frontier was settled, and
this caused a rise of IMPERIALISM, the move to

America. - Then, in 1898, our battleship Maine exploded in
Cuba. - We declared war on Spain, which controlled
Cuba, and the war was over in one year. - We gained territory in the Pacific Islands,
Caribbean, and the Philippines.
