• Japans population had doubled between 1872
  1925 which strained already limited resources
• U.S. returned to isolationist policies including
  tariffs to limit imports

• League of Nations was incapable of stopping
  military aggression
• September 1931 Japan invaded conquered
  Manchuria, northeastern China
• Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1935
• The Spanish Civil War gave German troops the
  chance to train before WWII

• Hitler was allowed to rebuild the German military
  in 1935
• Germany retook the Rhineland in 1936
• Germany annexed Austria 1937
• Germany invades Sudetenland 1938
• Germany takes over all of Czechoslovakia March
  1939

  control the German population and other nations
• The Third Reich systematically took away rights
  and dehumanized their opponents making it
  possible to eliminate all dissent
