Title: Sophomore English

1
Sophomore English
  • The way we do

2
The Purpose
  • We will be reviewing and looking at modifications
to the policies, procedures, expectations, and
    resources of this class
  • Arent I nice? I gave you the top three boxes of
    the summary sheet already!

3
Class Policies
  • Attendance
  • Tardies
  • Materials

4
Attendance
  • You should always try to be in class unless you
are so sick that you risk infecting the others
    around you
  • If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to
discover what was missed and to make up any work
    required
  • Class schedules and assignments can be found on
the website-bookmark it at home so you can access
    it easily

5
Tardies
  • You are tardy if you are not in the room when the
    bell has finished ringing
  • 3 tardies will result in a morning detention
  • You must serve a ten minute detention in my room
    before 1st hour starts
  • 4 tardies will result in a morning detention
  • You must serve a twenty minute detention in my
    room before 1st hour starts
  • More than 4 tardies will be referred to the
    office
  • Failure to serve morning detentions will result
in a referral to the office

6
Materials
  • You are expected to come prepared EVERYDAY
  • Bring your binder
  • You should have a binder for English class only
with divider tabs, pockets, and paper
  • Something to write with
  • BOOK
  • Better safe than sorrybring it.

7
Procedures
  • Bell-Ringers
  • Self-Assessment Slips
  • Returned papers
  • Make-up work and tests

8
Bell-Ringers
  • When class starts each day, there will be
something to write on the board
  • Maybe a journal-type entry, maybe DOL, maybe a
    question
  • No need to talk or discuss, just get out your
    bell-ringer sheet and start working
  • Use one sheet for the week
  • Date it each day
  • Turn in on Friday
  • If absent, leave a space and write Absent by the
    date

9
Self-Assessment Slips
  • These are new to you
  • The last 3-5 minutes of every day, you will fill
out a self-assessment slip and turn it in at the
    end of the week
  • Use the state standards on the wall
  • Ex After the summarizing activity today, I can
    paraphrase, summarize, organize, and synthesize
    information (5)
  • This is a good place to write any questions you
    may have also

10
Returned Papers
  • Yes, I will return papers to you
  • Hold on to them
  • Keep a section in your English binder for all
    your returned papers and quizzes
  • We will come back to them at the end of the
semester to see how well you have improved over
    the course of time
  • Check the bin for no name papersyou may not be
    getting points you earned

11
Make-Up Work and Tests
  • If you are absent, it is your responsibility to
learn about any missed assignment and complete it
  • The easiest way to do this is to check the
    Stoughton Site
  • Excused absences do not mean excused assignments
  • Tests can be made-up before/after school or
during a study hall-it is up to you to schedule it

12
Expectations
  • School
  • Class
  • Language
  • Violations

13
School Expectations
  • It is the expectation of the school that you are
present, on time, prepared, and ready to learn

14
Class Expectations
  • It is the expectation of your classmates that you
    treat everyone with respect
  • When someone else is supposed to be talking, that
means you are NOT supposed to be talking
  • This includes the teacher

15
Language
  • No foul, inappropriate, hurtful, bigoted, or
nasty language is acceptable, regardless of who
you are and what you say to your friends outside
of class or in your homes
  • Nothing racist-regardless of what race you are
  • Nothing degrading to any choice of lifestyle-this
    includes the word gay
  • No swears
  • Nothing meant to make another person feel small
    or inferior

16
Violations
  • If you break any of the agreements made with the
school spoken, written, or implied, you will be
    punished
  • Morning detentions for infractions
  • Office referral for continued or gross violations

17
Resources
  • This class is not meant to be easy, nor is it
    meant to be impossible
  • My goal is to challenge you to get better
  • This involves a lot of boring stuff, I know but
there is also plenty of fun to be had
  • With that said, there are many resources
    available to help you succeed
  • Teacher
  • Book
  • Website
  • Library
  • Classmates

18
Teacher
  • Hi, Im Mr. Stoughton
  • Im here in the mornings (except probably
Wednesday mornings when we have PLC meetings)
  • Im here after school (but when it is really hot,
I might cut out at like 320)
  • Im off from teaching 3rd and 7th hours
  • Just let me know you are coming!

19
Book
  • Look through your textbook, there are tons of
    resources, glossaries, instructions, and other
    fun things in there

20
Website
  • I gave you the URL for the Stoughton Site, I
recommend you bookmark it at home so you dont
have to type it in all the time
  • The daily presentations, assignments, documents,
and schedule are all available, as well as a
discussion board where you can ask questions-I
try to check once a night

21
The Library
  • The school library is filled with helpful people
    who know their stuff
  • Also, the public library is a great place to find
resources and meet with classmates outside of
    school
  • Some people prefer Borders or Barnes and
    Nobles (they have coffee)

22
Classmates
  • Which brings us to the people around you
  • Sometimes the guy next to you picked up on
    something you missedask him.
  • Older students who have been here before and know
    the skills/materials we are using
  • Bros, Siss, Parents, Grandparents, other people
  • People are generally pretty nice if you ask
    politely

23
The End
  • You should have plenty of information now to
write a summary of this presentation
  • However, dontfor now the outline is ok
  • All presentations from this point on are going to
    require that notes be taken
