Why might religion play an important role in
Mayan society? What evidence reflects that
fact? How might rainfall have an impact on Mayan
faith in their Gods?
39
Religion
  • Polytheistic, however some writings talk of a
    supreme God.
  • Placed great importance on blood, thus
bloodletting, their own and sacrificial. Do so in
    order to appease the Gods.
  • Adhered to an almost animist concept of spirits.
  • Believed that the universe existed in 5125 year
    long cycles.
  • Nobles cremated, although their heads were
    frequently mummified.
  • Much of their religion and culture in general is
    missing.
