New year is a time for reflection. Last week
What are you hoping for? This week what are we
supposed to be doing?
3
  • A Christian job description?
  • What is required of us?
  • In any area of life its good to know what the
    expectations are.

4
  • With God what are his expectations if we sign
up to a relationship with him?
  • Moses some helpful things to say

5
Deuteronomy 10 12 - 22
  • 12 And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God
ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to
walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve
the Lord your God with all your heart and with
all your soul, 13 and to observe the Lords
commands and decrees that I am giving you today
    for your own good?
  • 14 To the Lord your God belong the heavens, even
the highest heavens, the earth and everything in
    it.

6
  • 15 Yet the Lord set his affection on your
ancestors and loved them, and he chose you, their
descendants, above all the nations - as it is
    today.
  • 16 Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and do not
be stiff-necked any longer. 17 For the Lord your
God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great
God, mighty and awesome, who shows no
partiality and accepts no bribes.18 He defends
the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and
loves the foreigner residing among you, giving
them food and clothing. 19 And you are to
    love those

7
  • who are foreigners, for you yourselves were
    foreigners in Egypt.
  • 20 Fear the Lord your God and serve him. Hold
fast to him and take your oaths in his
name. 21 He is the one you praise he is your
God, who performed for you those great and
awesome wonders you saw with your own
eyes. 22 Your ancestors who went down into Egypt
were seventy in all, and now the Lord your God
has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky.

8
  • And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask
of you but to fear the Lord your God
  • Fear the Lord in Bible 100 times.
  • Its used to describe our relationship with God.
  • Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by
the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers. Acts

9
  • Not shrinking in terror.
  • All embracing, all encompassingrelationship with
    God.

  • God calls us to run from sin.
  • Habitual sin has a corrosive effecton our
    relationship with God.
  • Sin doesnt keep us from going to heaven we
dont earn our way to salvation. (Eph 2 8 9)
  • But sin breaks fellowship with him. Our
    relationship with him becomes theoretical.

11
  • Habitual sin causes guilt shame.
  • Deep in our spirit we know wehave offended God.
  • We hide from God.
  • We hide from other people.
  • We hide from our true selvesand rationalise our
    sin.

12
  • Sin opens the door to the enemy.
  • Eph 427 and do not give the devil a foothold.
  • Confession brings forgiveness.

13
  • To fear the Lord is totalinvolvement
    commitment to God.
  • It involves our whole being.
  • Gods promise v13
  • observe the Lords commands and decrees that I
am giving you today for your own good.
  • And 622 The Lord commanded us to obey all these
decrees and to fear the Lord our God, so that we
might always prosper and be kept alive. 622

of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in
obedience to him, to love him
  • Jesus tells us to love God and love our
    neighbour. Mk 1229 - 31
  • We can only begin to lovelike this when
    weunderstand Gods love for us.
  • This is love not that weloved God, but that
heloved us and sent his son as anatoning
sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 410

17
  • An example the Herald of Free Enterprise.
  • Its all about relationship not religion.
  • Greater love has no one than this to lay down
ones life for ones friends. Jn 1513

18
  • Also God showed his love through Jesus LIFE.
  • He stepped down from heaven
  • A father coming to embrace his children.
  • Love kneels down.

19
  • And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask
of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in
obedience to him, to love him, to serve
the Lord your God with all your heart and with
    all your soul.
  • What does it mean to serve the Lord?

20
We lay it all down because Jesus is Lord. (Matt
183) Intellectual Jesus thoughts, intentions,
opinions. Moral We dont determine our own
right wrong. We submit to Jesus teachingeven
when its counter culture. Vocational We
respond to Godscall on our life. What is Gods
purposefor me? To make a differencewhere he
has put us

obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord
your God with all your heart and with allyour
soul,  and to observe the Lordscommands and

    good.

We can hear God in many ways When God speaks
its like a spark falling on our hearts. When we
hear God wehave a choice. To respond and
thespark becomes a flame. Or not respond
anddismiss Gods guidance.

everything on it. It was your ancestors
who God fell in love with he picked their
children - thats you! - out of all the other
peoples. Thats where we are right now.So cut
